Book Description

March 17, 2009 4 - 8 years
THE BELOVED CLASSIC, NOW IN FRENCH!

Originally published in English as Green Eggs and Ham, this new French translation faithfully captures Dr. Seuss' beloved story and playful rhyme.

Here is the classic tale of Sam-I-am and his creative, silly and even desperate attempts to have his "nouveau cuisine" sampled by one unadventurous critic. Perfect for learning to read French, Les œufs verts au jambon also encourages readers to never give up when facing rejection and to keep an open mind about something new since that new thing may well be "so good, so good, you see."

♣ ♣ ♣

More About the Author

"A person's a person, no matter how small," Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted."

Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped millions of kids learn to read.

Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1925, he went to Oxford University, intending to acquire a doctorate in literature. At Oxford, Geisel met Helen Palmer, whom he wed in 1927. Upon his return to America later that year, Geisel published cartoons and humorous articles for Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at that time. His cartoons also appeared in major magazines such as Life, Vanity Fair, and Liberty. Geisel gained national exposure when he won an advertising contract for an insecticide called Flit. He coined the phrase, "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" which became a popular expression.

Geisel published his first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937, after 27 publishers rejected it.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and three Caldecott Honors, Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books. While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations of children of all ages to explore the joys of reading.

Par exemple, au lieu de « I do not like green eggs and ham./ I do not like them, Sam-I-am » on dit « Je n'aime pas les oeufs verts au jambon. Et quand je dis non, c'est non. » Un peu différent oui, mais également satisfaisant pour les tout-petits qui se réjouiront d'écouter mille façons de dire « Je n'en mangerai pas ! » Les grandes personnes prendront plaisir à lire ce livre aussi.

I didn't think it was possible to translate Dr. Seuss into french. However Anne-Laure Fournier Le Ray was able to translate "Green Eggs and Ham" without losing the rhythm or rhyme characteristic of Dr. Seuss and leaving the meaning and context of this work intact. "Sam-c'est moi" is the same as ever: determined and unshakeable in the face of his grumpy opponent who relentlessly refuses the green culinary delights with a flood of negative phrases such as "Je n'en veux pas, ni ici, ni là. / Je n'en veux pas à aucun endroit."
I must admit that the first few times I read it I had to get used to the small differences between this translation and the original version. For example, instead of "I do not like green eggs and ham. / I do not like them, Sam-I-am" it reads "Je n'aime pas les oeufs verts au jambon. Et quand je dis non, c'est non. " A little different yes, but equally satisfying for toddlers who will love to listen to a thousand ways to say "I won't eat it!" Grownups will enjoy reading this book too.

This is even more fun in French than it is in English, especially if you're reading it to a Frenchman and your accent is more Inspector Clouseau than true French. Read more
