5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for women.
I'm a straight guy. Matter of fact, I look like the bouncer who wouldn't let you into that bar in college. That having been said, let's chuck all stereotypes, theirs no room for them in music. I know the average buyer would dismiss this title without giving it a second look. But, Lesbian Favorites earns, at least a peak. We all know and respect K.D. Lang, Taylor...

Sorry, but all the songs sound alike. One song even sounds like they were trying to copy Madonna. I really did not like the CD. Nothing aganist Lesbians.

Lang, Taylor Dayne, and Ani DiFranco. If you're a fan, chances are you already have these songs. But, it's the artistes who've been hiding in the periphery that make this collection required listening for folk/rock fans. Case in point: Gretchen Phillips who gained notoriety with Two Nice Girls in the early nineties. You remember, she was the architect behind the alt classic "I spent my last $10.00 on birth control and beer." What? Haven't heard it. No problem, it's track 18. As for Grech's previously unissued cut "Swimming", take my word that it would challenge the eroticism of any other song on the market. Another notable is Disappear Fear. A nifty duet from Maryland, that lives halfway between the Indigo Girls and Shawn Colvin. Others such as: Jane Siberry, Farron, Dar Williams, and Janis Ian have been making great music for a long time and deserve their day in court. If you're a folk/rock fan then check out this groovy sample of first-rate musicians.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice mix of talent, February 15, 2003

If you enjoy this type of music, you won't be dissapointed by this album. A few well known-artists, such as k.d. lang, Ani DiFranco, and Jill Solbule appear, as well as some lesser known artists such as Gretchen Philips, and Wendy&Lisa contribute. Jill Solbule shines with the perky, gleefull "I Kissed a Girl." Ani DiFranco adds the thoughtfull tale "In or Out" about complexities of relationships. Dar Williams has the guitar-and accordian(?) driven "As cool as I am." Jane Siberry sings the flowy, mysterious, slow-paced yet well-driven "Temple."
I was a bit let down that some other artists did not appear, such as Melissa Etheridge, and M'Shell N'Degcello. However, I did enjoy the oppurtunity to hear some new voices, such as Fem 2 Fem, Betty, Phranc. Well worth checking out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must possess possession!, August 12, 1998

You're a girl. You do dishes to Belly, you do 'the morose thing' to Tori, you sing along to the Indigo Girls like you're in front of a campfire. You need a record like this to live by, to function by. None of the aforementioned artists are on this record, but their ilk is. Kristen Hall's song is great, and who can not love a female remake of 50 ways to leave your lover? I would give it five stars but the included Fem2Fem, a terrible, terrible band whose savvy male manager, song writer etc. has made homosexuality their main selling point.

After listening to this album I struggled to reach a decision on my overall view, but generally the album is very good and is worth buying. With the eception of K.D.Lang I hadn't heard of any of the artists before and now I wonder why? I love track 5. Cool as I am - Dar Williams and it is the one I play the most. Other tracks I would recommend are, 3. I kissed a girl - Jill Sobule, 9. I'll be your shelter- Taylor Dayne, 10. Prey to you - Kristen Hall and 16. Twist in my sobriety - Tanita Tikaram. The only songs that I disliked were the last two, 50 ways to leave your lover - Sandra Bernhard and I spent my last $10.00 (on birth control and beer)- Two Nice Girls. All in all its a good album that every girl should have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music with My Kind of Twist!, February 15, 2002
This review is from: Lesbian Favorites: Women Like Us (Audio CD)
Whether you like pop, folk, rock, moody or humorous music, this CD has something for you. Ani D'Franco and kd lang are household names, but so many people don't know of wonderful artists like Dar Williams, Kristen Hall, Jane Siberry, and disappear fear. I own everything any of them have done, and can't get enough of them.

Try this CD for variety, for depth, for good fun! I give this a really high recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT CD, May 7, 2006
This review is from: Lesbian Favorites: Women Like Us (Audio CD)
i love this cd. has some of the best songs ever made for lesbians...hence the title. best song on the whole album is the last one...spent my last ten dollars on birth control and beer. that is one of the funniest songs ive ever heard. you gotta hear it. other great ones are i'll be your shelter,(sing it to my lover all the time) in or out, i kissed a girl, etc. but i think it should have had other really great ones like "perfect by doria roberts" "constant craving" kd lang "drive" by melissa ferrick...so many others i didnt mention but are much better than some of the songs on here. oh well...hopefully theyll have a volume two and well see those songs. if youre a lesbian then buy this album you need it. its really good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Whose favorites are these?, March 26, 2001
This review is from: Lesbian Favorites: Women Like Us (Audio CD)
I was very disappointed in the album, and it's title is an absoulute misnomer. No Indigo Girls, no Melissa Ethridge, no Ferrick, and no real good women's folk music that makes women's festivals so much fun! The folk bands that are represented on this album are represented poorly, as the compilers seem to have picked the most pop-sounding and over-produced cuts in the bunch...
