This review is from: Lesbian & Gay Nurses (Paperback)
I thought this book was a trailblazer. I liked the reference to the lack of recognition of nursing's leaders sexuality. I enjoyed the quote from Florence Nightinggale "I have slept with some of the finest women in Europe". I learned of this book from the Lavender Lamp, the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Nurses, and used it as a reference in my BSN program, as I explored my particular clinical focus, culturally competent care as related to the gay, lesbian, and transgender clients. Being an out former transsexual, and lesbian nurse, I found it very affirming. I continue along these lines in my graduate education where I attempt to learn more strategies to make health care and nursing more gay friendly outside of my favorite,"I'm queer, I'm here get used to it." to add to my armentorium. Part of my Associate Degree education, I met much resistance because of my sexuality, one instructor stating, "You can never be a nurse being the way you are". In my BSN program, "why don't you practice in NYC where there are more of your kind" to which I said, "I think God has me here (in New Hampshire) because there is so much work to do here". Never again, We shall overcome!
