More About the Author

I'm a retired college English, women's studies, and literature teacher. I've published many articles over the years, the first one in Mother Jones magazine in 1977, the most recent in New Spirit magazine in 2007.

I've also had three books published. Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence (with Rosemary Keefe Curb,1985), became an unexpected best seller in the US and was published in 8 other countries. This ground-breaking anthology and my second controversial book, On My Honor: Lesbian Reflect on Their Scouting Experiences (1997), are out of print, but can sometimes be found on amazon.com. They also are available from me directly.

My third book, written with my life partner Becky Bohan, is Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully: A Journey with Cancer and Beyond. This informative and inspirational story of our sister-in-law, a professor of nursing diagnosed with incurable cancer, can comfort and educate anyone afraid of a terminal illness or dying. Anyone who loves a riveting, well-written story will also enjoy Living Consciously, Dying Gracefully, available on amazon.com.

Becky and I divide our time between Minneapolis and the Caribbean. We must be two of the luckiest people on this miraculous planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL INSIGHTS April 8, 1998
I have seen this book on countless discount tables. I finally bought it and read it. This is not a tell all for lesbian nuns who reveal their sexual escapades while cloistered in a convent. This is a collection of stories told by ex nuns about their short stay in convents all across America. It is their story. Their life. Each of these women left for various reasons and all are now fullfilled in their life on the outside as out lesbians. There is nothing cheekie about this book. It is well written and well told. I am glad I finally picked it up and actually read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning! September 25, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a stunning collection of beautifully written stories, of how women came to be themselves. Each of these women's journeys was at times painful, always heart wrenching, and always written in her individual voice. This anthology is not to be taken lightly. It is not filled with the lascivious sex that a teenage boy might think, but it is dozens of true stories of evolving women who come to learn who they are, and how they fit with their definition of God. An amazing collection of stories.

Yes, most of the women who tell their stories in this volume did leave the church but by no means all. I'm disappointed that the enthusiastic reviews paint it as rather one-note, when it really isn't.

I love this book I think I've read it at least three times. It may not be worth $400 but it's most definitely worth $7!!

5.0 out of 5 stars cloistered love June 29, 2004
In this book we encounter the biographies and personal photos of numerous nuns or ex-nuns who have "come out" as lesbians. they talk about how they came into convent life, how they discovered their sexuality, and how that altered their religious life. Very fascinating study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong and Courageous Women!! December 2, 2013
By Charli
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This compilation of stories, written by young women in the 60's who were trying to live lives they thought they were being called by God to live, is a very moving account of their joys, sorrows, disappointments and often sheer heartbreak. I applaud their courage telling their stories, knowing that there would be those who would not understand, those who would criticize, and maybe even condemn them. Within the beautiful tapestry of their stories, I found bits and pieces of my own. I found comfort and validation, understanding and acceptance. Reading their updates and learning about the amazing things they have done with their lives, will give courage to women of any age to not let societal expectations rule their choices. The best lesson these amazing women would have us learn...is to be who we are, who we were meant to be...and stand tall while doing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars So much sadness October 3, 2013
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Perhaps this was a book which needed to be written. It's hard to fault the authors' method, which is just to let the sisters in question tell their own stories, seeking a diverse spectrum. One may indeed draw insights, but mostly it just makes me feel very happy that I am not a lesbian nun, especially a pre-Vatican II one.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating September 25, 2013
By Lauren
As a historian, I really value the story of how this book came to be written. This second edition contains much new material, most specifically the afterthoughts by Nancy Manahan and the unfinished memoir by Rosemary Curb. Do not miss these two essays. Sometimes the story of a book's reception is as important as the book itself. This is one of those times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence July 10, 2013
By Odie
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a concise collection of experiences inside cloistered Religious life. These women share their humor and their heartbreak in coming to understand their sexuality and "Particular Friendships." In an often cruel and emotionally brutal rejection by their male clergy and community superiors; these women discover their identities spiritually and emotionally, finding solace and self-acceptance when many of them leave Religious life. This book also shows the emotionally destructive effects of living in a "closet" environment, no matter how strong an individual's faith and love of God may be. I recommend this book for both Gay and Straight readers interested in Religious life. If you are looking for soft or hard porn reading this book is not for you. "Breaking Silence" underscores the urgent need for Vatican III and major reform. Cheers.
