4.0 out of 5 stars Leslie keeps it simple..., January 11, 2006
By
Debbie (St. Louis, MO United States) - See all my reviews
If you liked the first book by Leslie, then you will like this book as well. Her first book's main focus was on exercise with a little bit of diet thrown in, this one is the reverse, mostly about diet with a little bit of exercise thrown in.

It is once again a simple 6 week program designed to give you tips on healthy habits to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. It's not rocket science, we all have heard a lot of this before, but it is a simple approach that can help you, especially if you include exercise.

If you are a Leslie fan, you will like this book. If you aren't a fan, but want some simple tips to incorporate healthier habits about eating into your life, give this book a shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars An encouraging book!, February 19, 2006
By

Eat Smart, Walk Strong contains common-sense advice that can help you lose weight. It's simple approach suggests that applying small lifestyle changes spread out over time will give you a better chance for long-term weight loss and better overall health.

For instance, a daily substitution of one soda/juice for water in you diet could net you a forty-five pound weight loss, per year, without altering your meals.

As a veteran dieter, I'm as battle weary as a soldier giving my all to take the same hill over and over again only to be pushed back, often further than when I began my last assault. This book gives hope even to this cynic as it focuses on the ground (habits) hindering me, not on the mountain I stare at everyday.

According to the author, daily changes like walking 30 minutes, even in place if you don't have a treadmill. You'll have more feel-good energy, and if combined with drinking 8 glasses of water, you can expect a yearly weight loss of 30 pounds per year and cut the risk of diabetes by 58% and heart disease by 45%.

Included are secret pattern-busting activities as simple as saying grace before meals, turning off the TV while you eat, reinventing breakfast, and choosing glasses and dishes that reinforce your eating goals.

The book has three basis parts.
1: We Make Our Habits, and Then They Make Us
2: Six Weeks to a New You
3: Recipes for Life

Also included is her Flex Questionnaire to identify an individual's problem issues.

Six sections the Flex Questionnaire focuses on are, Intentional Eating Habit, Breakfast Habit, Portion-Control Habit, Slow-Food Habit, Snack Habit, Restaurant Habit, and Exercise Habit.

The book contains colorful, simple, daily charts to fill out for six weeks. You are encouraged to log even minimal accomplishments. Each week has a designated habit to focus on, with recipes included. I'd say most of the recipes call for common items most well-stocked kitchens will have on hand.

Armchair Interviews says: If you are looking for an upbeat book that encourages you to try again by making small changes, then Eat Smart, Walk Strong will fit the bill.

5.0 out of 5 stars LESLIE DOES IT AGAIN!!, January 17, 2006
I really enjoyed Leslie's newest, proof she just keep getting better and better. Alot of the material is common sense, yes, but she presents it in a doable, positive and throughly understandable 6 week program. Each week focuses on a different habit and highlights a certain food in the weeks Food Focus. Proof that small changes can yield big results! For me,week 3 was especially helpful in focusing on portion control, the advice and tips were simple but very effective, no calorie, fat or carb counting involved in this plan and that was a welcome relief to me.
Great book, highly recommended, especially if used in conjunction with her fabulous walking workouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars GET THEE BEHIND ME, TEMPTATION !, March 11, 2006
All of us want to look better. All of us want to feel better. Many have tried more fad diets than we care to remember - all of which did little or nothing for our weight or our good nature. For me, Leslie Sansone's programs work because they're simple, they make sense and, of all things, they're effective.

After creating "Walk Away the Pounds" in which she focuses on exercise, Sansone turned her attention to food - what we eat, how we eat, and why we eat it. I hear myself in so many of these passages, immediately recognizing the habit patterns I've developed over the years which, in reality, are neither healthful nor helpful. She makes it easy to change those habits by approaching them one at a time.

Further, she explains how we can eat healthful meals when we're dining out, and what a "normal serving size" looks like. I'll never tell what I considered a "normal" serving of ice cream or mashed potatoes! And, how about those snacks - what they can do and what they cannot do. Last but not least, Mom was right - breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Sansone tells us why in her no nonsense approach to healthier eating.

As she points out, choosing the right foods isn't a matter of knowledge or intention, it is a case of slips happening "when we're tired, starving or overcome by temptation. These moments are going to happen to all of us from time to time. The trick is to learn to head them off at the pass whenever possible...."

Listen and learn.

This book is a very straight forward, easy to follow, sensable weight loss book. Recipes are easy and healthy. It recommends gradual change so bad habits can be replaced with healthy ones. I have used many of Leslie's tapes and was encouraged by her book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best recipes ever, January 29, 2007
By
Carolyn (Redondo Beach, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I picked this book up at the library originally because the walking part of the title caught my eye, but it is the recipes that convinced me to buy my own copy. I have never found so many recipes that I (and my husband and 17 year old son) really like in one cookbook: black bean chili with avocados, orange pork loin, etc., etc. The best part is that none of them are that hard or contain that many ingredients and they are healthy for you. The book also contains a lot of good practical advice on improving your eating habits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looking to get started??, April 4, 2008
By
If you are looking for a simple, thoughful guide to help you get started in the right direction towards better health, this book is perfect for you. It's easy to read, easy to follow along, and very inspiring! I really liked the Quiz in the book that helps you figure out what your problem areas are with your eating and how to develop healthier habits. I like Leslie's whole body approach. She connects emotional fitness, spiritual fitness, and physical fitness into a complete program.

I think this book is great for beginners because it builds upon simple goals and concepts day by day. You don't have to completely change your whole life and way of being, you are making small changes to make a big difference overall. I think this is a non- intimidating approach to fitness and eating smarter and being more thoughtful with both. Leslie's recipes might also encourage you to try foods you've never had before.

Leslie encourages using a pedometer to keep track of how many steps you walk in a day. You would not believe a difference this makes! This book and approach will open your eyes to things you may not have thought of before. The nutrition and fitness facts in the book are also very powerful and motivating.

Leslie's products are always great for boosting your mood and inspiring you to continue doing good things for yourself. It's definitely worth a shot!! I like this book because it helps you create good habits and stick to them.

If you are looking for a quick fix I wouldn't recommend this because it's a gradual approach. However, you will see and feel results if you do the program, which is six weeks. I saw results in about 10 days after starting the program.

One piece of advice: When it comes to Leslie's recipes, I feel some of the recipes could be cleaned up a bit. For example, try for brown rice, or whole grain pasta and low fat cheeses. She has many recipes that just say "pasta" or "cheddar cheese" but if you want to be more productive, I recommend substituting a low fat dairy product and whole grain products for any pastas she lists in her recipes. She also mentions adding in some fruits that are high glycemic. I recommend instead using a sugar free substitute or non-sweetened apple sauce in place of those things. None of the foods she lists are BAD for you....the recipes are very tasty and great! I simply recommend considering these substitutions to speed up your weight loss. She mentions them in the chapters in the book but then doesn't list them for some of her recipes.

I think Leslie's book is more for someone who is looking to get started and maybe has not tried a lot of varieties of foods. It's a gradual approach and perhaps after doing the six week program you will consider adding in the whole grain products and low fat dairy products instead of other foods. It will help you.

I find Leslie to be refreshing and her spirit is really wonderful. She motivated me to get off the couch and actually do something to benefit my health. I recommend her if you need a boost or a gentle push in the right direction. There's more than enough room in her program to make the program suit your needs and your lifestyle. It's small, gradual changes that make the bigger, long term change! All of these together will help you achieve your goals. This book is worth buying and the program is worth your time and is worth doing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information, January 24, 2012

This review is from: Leslie Sansone's Eat Smart, Walk Strong: The Secrets to Effortless Weight Loss (Kindle Edition)
A short review for this one, because there's not much to say beyond the fact that I liked it and will find it helpful. There was not a lot of nutrition info that was brand new to me, but the section explaining how the body burns energy, uses and stores calories, etc., was really good and explained this in a way that finally is clear to me. There are many really good recipes in the book, and since I actually think I want to make several of them I went ahead and bought the paperback version after reading the kindle version. (For me, cooking by following a recipe on kindle just does not work, unless it's in a cookbook specifically formatted for kindle.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - But Not for Kindle, April 16, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book on Kindle before really thinking it through. I have really enjoyed the book but the Kindle formatting is a bit off and I think you need it in paperback to use it to its full advantage. I am now on to buy it again in paperback. The recipes look interesting but I have not tried them - I will wait to have the book in hand.

This book is very helpful to get you motivated and thinking about small changes that can be added to your daily life. It is a very no-nonsense approach and she explains why but doesn't drag out the explanation like some diet books do. It goes very well with her walking videos which I love!

Just wanted to say also - I love my Kindle! This review is not a slam against it - just wanted to point out it might not be the best mode for books that have a workbook format.
