Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The "secrets" revealed in this friendly volume won't surprise many readers: losing weight requires burning more calories and consuming fewer. But given that the obesity epidemic is getting, well, bigger, the helpful tips and ideas are needed, even if they aren't particularly newsworthy. Sansone, creator of the Walk Away the Pounds book and video series, begins by explaining healthy dieting habits, highlighting typical stumbling blocks and outlining her PERFECT support system (an acronym for plan, educate, repeat, flex, exercise, celebrate and transform) that details steps she believes are key to straightforward weight loss. Then she introduces a six-week plan, complete with workbook pages for each day, designed to eradicate bad habits and promote good ones. She also includes dozens of reasonably tempting recipes (e.g., Apricot Lentil Stew, Chicken Mole, and Oatmeal-Raisin Chocolate Chip Cookies) to make in conjunction with the plan. Except for the depressing suggestion that "people do best if they spend most of their exercise time on indoor walking... walking in place... in complete privacy," this is an uplifting diet guide that can help anyone currently in the nonactive population segment—as long as they stick to it. 4.0 out of 5 stars Leslie keeps it simple..., January 11, 2006
By
Debbie (St. Louis, MO United States) - See all my reviews
If you liked the first book by Leslie, then you will like this book as well. Her first book's main focus was on exercise with a little bit of diet thrown in, this one is the reverse, mostly about diet with a little bit of exercise thrown in.

It is once again a simple 6 week program designed to give you tips on healthy habits to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. It's not rocket science, we all have heard a lot of this before, but it is a simple approach that can help you, especially if you include exercise.

If you are a Leslie fan, you will like this book. If you aren't a fan, but want some simple tips to incorporate healthier habits about eating into your life, give this book a shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars An encouraging book!, February 19, 2006
By

Eat Smart, Walk Strong contains common-sense advice that can help you lose weight. It's simple approach suggests that applying small lifestyle changes spread out over time will give you a better chance for long-term weight loss and better overall health.

For instance, a daily substitution of one soda/juice for water in you diet could net you a forty-five pound weight loss, per year, without altering your meals.

As a veteran dieter, I'm as battle weary as a soldier giving my all to take the same hill over and over again only to be pushed back, often further than when I began my last assault. This book gives hope even to this cynic as it focuses on the ground (habits) hindering me, not on the mountain I stare at everyday.

According to the author, daily changes like walking 30 minutes, even in place if you don't have a treadmill. You'll have more feel-good energy, and if combined with drinking 8 glasses of water, you can expect a yearly weight loss of 30 pounds per year and cut the risk of diabetes by 58% and heart disease by 45%.

Included are secret pattern-busting activities as simple as saying grace before meals, turning off the TV while you eat, reinventing breakfast, and choosing glasses and dishes that reinforce your eating goals.

The book has three basis parts.
1: We Make Our Habits, and Then They Make Us
2: Six Weeks to a New You
3: Recipes for Life

Also included is her Flex Questionnaire to identify an individual's problem issues.

Six sections the Flex Questionnaire focuses on are, Intentional Eating Habit, Breakfast Habit, Portion-Control Habit, Slow-Food Habit, Snack Habit, Restaurant Habit, and Exercise Habit.

The book contains colorful, simple, daily charts to fill out for six weeks. You are encouraged to log even minimal accomplishments. Each week has a designated habit to focus on, with recipes included. I'd say most of the recipes call for common items most well-stocked kitchens will have on hand.

Armchair Interviews says: If you are looking for an upbeat book that encourages you to try again by making small changes, then Eat Smart, Walk Strong will fit the bill.

5.0 out of 5 stars LESLIE DOES IT AGAIN!!, January 17, 2006
I really enjoyed Leslie's newest, proof she just keep getting better and better. Alot of the material is common sense, yes, but she presents it in a doable, positive and throughly understandable 6 week program. Each week focuses on a different habit and highlights a certain food in the weeks Food Focus. Proof that small changes can yield big results! For me,week 3 was especially helpful in focusing on portion control, the advice and tips were simple but very effective, no calorie, fat or carb counting involved in this plan and that was a welcome relief to me.
Great book, highly recommended, especially if used in conjunction with her fabulous walking workouts.
