If you don't know Leslie West's work, I'd rather you started with Mountain, a band sadly almost unknown these day. Their early albums, or their superb double live set Twin Peaks, are great examples of guitar-driven late-60s/early 70s rock. But this set ain't a bad place to start either, I'm glad Amazon is carrying it. West is an interesting player, delivering bone-crushing power chords from his Les Paul Jr. one minute, then spinning a delicate acoustic dream the next. His singing is in the rough-edged heavy-metal vein, but it's unpretentious too, he doesn't expect anyone to be impressed by his vocals. Ditto with his choice of songs, some of these numbers are straight-ahead diesel-fume rockers, but then you wouldn't be here if you didn't have a taste for that kind of music. But with West there is always something a little extra, a jazzy guitar lick or a turn of phrase that shows he was always a step ahead of the big-hair guitar bands that followed in his footsteps. I'm glad he survived the 70s, even he admits drugs came close to doing him in, and I'm having fun rediscovering his work on CD, my old vinyl Mountain and West, Bruce and Laing albums are pretty much worn out! And you have got to love that politically incorrect cover art, shooting pool between the white-vinyl-booted legs of a mini-skirted model, smell the glove indeed. ;-)

Leslie West at his shmoozenist, oozinest, heaviest best. Lovely ballads walk arm-in-arm with ass-booting heaviness. Mick Jagger on guitar (no vocals) makes for an interesting touch on the second half of this two record disc. Somehow, for the entirety of the disk, you keep getting blown away just when you think it can get no heavier. Leslie's ability to bait the listener off guard, coupled with his ability to pummel home the hard rock message, speaks to the duality of this two ton "twister" of hearts and ears alike, tugging on the heartstrings before blowing the entire load in your disbelieving face. Buy this if you want to be able to sneak the rock in on your girlfriend in-between songs she'll say are "nice." What a ploy; what an album (two); what in the hell are you waiting for?

If you like bands such as Mountain, The Animals or The Rolling Stones, you'll probably like this Album. Of course Leslie West was one of the founders of Mountain. Mick Jagger actually plays on this album which features a nice cover of Honky Tonk Woman and House of the Rising Sun.
I owned the Great Fatsby in college and was thrilled to find it available on CD. Try it, you'll like it.
