just a bloody perfect little record - all hail The Juan and the producing team (DFA - thank you!) for helping Juan to realize this new phase of his amazing career. Gives all the electroclash pretenders a firm smack in the face - this is the real deal - he knows the history of his medium - it's dance, it's funk, it's post-rock, it's cold and angular, hot and sweaty - it's everything you need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasent...Plus Some., September 19, 2005
This review is from: Less Than Human (Audio CD)
Well, I bought this on a guess. I had a feeling it was dark and funky, and it is. John makes each song glow with electric love, and yet each song is dark enough to make you feel at least a little dirty. To me, it has a a Cure like feel in that same way - dark, but always happy and complex. I danced alone to this CD, which is odd for me. It rips you a new one.

Track 3 is the big hitter in my eyes. If you don't know whether you like it or not after the first two songs, 3 will make your pelvis whip the sky.

Thank you. That is all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous, original, October 21, 2005

Varied, impeccably constructed record that encompasses house, disco, a little IDM, and of course a bit of electro. In the end though, it's completely its own animal, dancy and atmospheric at the same time.

Earlier guy had it right; it's pretty close to being perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great debut for a great Techno Rock band, March 22, 2010

The Juan MacLean is a true techno rock group, where the only traditional insturment is pretty much the drums. This allows for a great range of creativity that the band exploits. The vocals by Nancy Wang are great. She evokes a sort of Blade Runner somber tone with energy, and the few times that the male singer kicks in he adds to the effort.

This album is worth buying for anyone interested in this genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds the hype - especially the epic finale DANCE WITH ME, August 10, 2005

After many singles and 12" remixes on the DFA label, THE JUAN MCLEAN (ala JOHN MCLEAN from SIX FINGER SATELLITE) finally drops his "debut" CD, and it's a corker! Mining the same sort of proto-house, dirt electro, NYC no-wave art-rock meets Paradise Garage sound that the DFA does so well, this album features vocals and contributions from LCD SOUNDSYSTEM's JAMES MURPHY, NANCY WHANG, and more - all the tracks kick, but it's the album's stunning 13-MINUTE-PLUS finale, DANCE WITH ME, that builds and builds and builds to a devastating climax. Pass the towel! This one's a keeper.
