4.0 out of 5 stars She Is!, May 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lesson of Love (Audio CD)
This is an interesting album, with some strong moments and a few uncharacteristically weaker ones. The best pieces on this album are the traditional Baptist remakes--although I doubt you've ever heard them rocking like this! "Power in the Blood" will have you dancing in your seat. There is also a voice/acoustic guitar version of "Holy, Holy, Holy" that is beautiful. Cleveland's own "Enter His Courts" is also a good piece, but there are a couple that just fall flat--a remake of a 1970's hit "Mighty Lord" just doesn't seem to work for me. Also the title piece, "Lesson of Love," is OK but I wished that she would stay away from synthesizer perdition on that one. Her voice and musical work is fresh and clear, and I'd like to see it stay that way! Still, some of her trademark blues/rock/Christian combination shines through. This woman should have a wider audience!

4.0 out of 5 stars Get This While It's Still Available, July 13, 2001

This is Ashley Cleveland's third project. In some respects "A Lesson Of Love" is more laid back than "A Bus Named Desire"(soon to be out of print) and "Big Town"(out of print). Ashley's distinctive voice and writing make this project unique. Kenny Greenberg does another outstanding job on guitar, the rest of the band is solid backing this dynamic duo.

In some respects this set reminds me of a praise and worship album. "There Is A Light" is a great, meditative ballad, "Revive Us Again" and "Power In The Blood" are staple items from hymn books of the church and are presented here with a bluesy/rock beat.

"He Is" and "You Are There" are rockers while the title track "A Lesson Of Love" is a great soft rock arrangement.

Better get this one while you can, rumor has it this will be out of print soon. A very highly recommended addition to your music collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful album!, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Lesson of Love (Audio CD)
This album is one of the most powerful Christian albums I own. The title track, He Is, Revive Us Again, Power In The Blood. These are all terrific songs. She has a voice that has power and she lets it rip on every track. Purchase this and you will understand what I'm talking about.

Oh yeah, this is right up my alley! I stumbled upon Ashley's music when I found a copy of "Big Town" in a used C.D. shop. I was hooked.......how could she be writing about me when she's never met me?! "Lesson Of Love" is somewhat different but beautiful and brillant nevertheless. What a joy it is when someone with a voice you love sings about the One you love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome album, awesome artist!, September 5, 2000

I've bought a lot of Christian music, before and after buying this album in '96, and with well over 100 albums in the collection, this is still one of my all-time favorites. The rich hard-driving vocals and guitar are truly fantastic. The message is not suger coated, or hinted at, and the blues-rock styled remakes of old gospel standards must be heard to be appreciated. By all accounts Ashley Cleveland is one of the most respected talents by those in the Christian music industry, but one of the most under appreciated by music buyers.

If you like good old southern rock, blues, and gospel, you won't be disapointed with this album.
