Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Ashcroft's book celebrates the simple, the quiet and the routine. Ashcroft, Republican senator from Missouri, shares several personal vignettes that reveal the many lessons he learned from his father, J. Robert Ashcroft. As Ashcroft tells his own story, from his failure in his first bid for Congress to his successful campaign for governor of Missouri, he reflects on the lessons he learned. One lesson is that, through the ups and downs of failures, we become better people; as we become better people, God calls us to bigger jobs. Ashcroft illustrates this lesson by describing his rise from state auditor to attorney general of Missouri. Another lesson he describes is that of delayed gratification, putting off something so that you can experience something even better in the future. Ashcroft holds up his relationship with his own father as a model for sons and fathers to emulate in America today.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book to show how a father can really influence a child, July 13, 1999
This review is from: Lessons From a Father to His Son (Hardcover)
I feel that the mark of a true book isn't to inform us about something, but to make us ponder farther on the subject. I can't say that this book told me how to be a father, but it did show me what a gift it is going to be when I become a one. It was a great tribute to his father. Even though I don't believe in ALL of his values, I do have some things to consider in my onw life. After reading this book, I have a different view of some of the same issues. I recommend it to anyone that feels that they still have something to learn in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A moral compass--two amazing men!, October 16, 2001

This review is from: Lessons From a Father to His Son (Hardcover)
In light of his role in the government at this time, it was enlightening and refreshing to read that John Ashcroft had such a great Christian upbringing. The lessons he learned from his father have served him well in public life. This book seems to strive not so much to give an autobiography of John D. Ashcroft, but to show how much his father influenced his life. It is an example to all Christian fathers. Even if the reader might not be a fundamentalist Christian, he or she will learn what an influence one person can be in the life of another. Excellent book!

It is "road map" to parenting and a encouraging tool for fatherhood. I purchased 20 copies for friends. It's a must regardless of the child's age.
