About the Author
Sophie Jordan grew up on a pecan farm in the Texas hill country, where she wove fantasies of dragons, warriors, and princesses. A former high school English teacher, she's also the New York Times bestselling author of Avon historical romances and the Firelight series. She now lives in Houston with her family. When she's not writing, she spends her time overloading on caffeine (lattes and Diet cherry Coke preferred), talking plotlines with anyone who will listen (including her kids), and cramming her DVR with true-crime and reality-TV shows.

Scottish lord, Logan McKinney may be impoverished but he'd hoped to marry an heiress he at least found tolerable. He'd never expected to meet a woman as exciting as Cleo. Women have always thrown themselves at him, and yet Cleo prefers the company of a decrepit old man to his. When he tempts her with a kiss, her passion is awakened but she's still determined to marry the earl.
The last thing Cleo wants is a handsome, virile young husband--a lesson she learned from her mother's tragic life--so why can't she resist Logan's kiss or his touch? And if she doesn't marry the earl quickly, her stepfather will surely make good on his terrible threats.
I'll admit there were times in the story I thought I knew where these two were headed, only for Ms. Jordon to take them in an expected direction. Cleo has very logical reasons for wanting a husband in name only, reasons she can't share with anyone, much less Logan. Meanwhile, Logan knows what he wants and for the first time in his life must treat a woman as his equal if he's to have any chance of winning her.
Once again Ms. Jordan has created a worthy hero and heroine who grow and open up in order to earn their happily-ever-after. I love that Logan is not a rake, a scoundrel, or wild young rogue of the ton, but an honorable man doing his duty. That he wants to care for the woman he marries only makes him better. Cleo is a loving daughter and sister whose sense of responsibility often misguides her, but I cheered her on as she found her way to happiness with her dashing Scot. A thoroughly delightful historical romance that belongs on everyone's keeper shelf!
Lord Logan McKinney needs to marry an heiress quickly to help his family and his falling down castle. He had decided on a lady, and while she will do, she does not stir his blood like the delightful Cleo. Once he meets Cleo, he knows she is the one for him. Convincing Cleo that the attraction that burns between them proves to be very difficult but Logan uncovers the clues surrounding Cleo's instance of a loveless marriage and takes steps to protect her and her family. But when circumstances force the couple together before Cleo is ready to let Logan in, can Logan find a way to show Cleo that love is possible as well respect or will Cleo's fear override her heart until it is too late?
Oh, what a delightful, witty, sexy book! The attraction between Cleo and Logan just leaps off the pages!Read more ›
Rating: B-/C+ ... Heat: Warm
Life has not been kind to Cleopatra Hadley or her family. When the story opens, Cleo is holding in her arms the body of yet another stillborn half-sibling. Cleo is charged with the harrowing task of taking the tiny body to the undertaker. This is a familiar occurrence for Cleo, who is her mother's oldest daughter--one of fourteen living children and numerous that did not survive. Cleo's life is filled with births and deaths, all at the hands of her stepfather and his rather... prodigious need to procreate.
When Cleo returns home, she finds her mother out of bed and entertaining a strange man who turns out to be a representative for her father--a man she doesn't know and has never met. He is offering to give her mother enough coin to last the family two years... if Cleo agrees to come live with him. For her family's sake, Cleo accepts the offer.
And then everything changes for Cleo--taking her from impoverished with no expectations to an heiress who must marry an English gentleman (her father's request). As Cleo has no desire whatsoever for a handsome face or a virile body, she sets her sights on the elderly (see: octogenarian) Lord Thrumgoodie. As he is both feeble and frail--and couldn't produce any heirs with his previous four wives--Cleo see's him as safe from both consummation of the marriage and unwanted pregnancy.
Logan McKinney is the opposite of safe. Logan's Scottish estate is in need of many repairs, so he is expected to marry an heiress. A seemingly easy task until he is introduced to the vapid ladies on the marriage mart. When Logan meets Cleo, he thinks she is the answer to his problems. And so he pursues her, cajoles and woos her.Read more ›

Wonderful, romantic, couldn't put it down. There should be a sequel with appropriate punishment for Ladda and Hamilton. Mary should go. She'll cause nothing but trouble.Published 3 months ago by Maia
