3.0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Unity
"Lessons in Truth" is a book first published in 1903, based on articles written some years earlier by Harriet Emilie Cady, a prominent member of the religious movement known as New Thought. The book exists in several different versions. This is a review of the "Unity Classic Library" edition from 1999. (Amazon may have placed this review on the product pages of some other...

LESSONS IN TRUTH

I asked one of my closest friends (Rev. Rose M. Cooper, P.H.D.), a Minister in Unity to provide me some insight on what the movement was about and why so many people seemed to be turning towards it for leadership and spirituality. She provided me this book (Lessons In Truth), multiple visits to worship with her and many discussions where she expressed her beliefs and opinions. The book brought many of our past discussions and activities I had witnessed to a level that became more clear. One example of this is in Unity God is within you and therefore part of you. Your growth and direction come from within and not from a separate entity outside of our bodies and spirits. The single eye on God is another great example. This book was written by Dr. H. Emilie Cady and it is very clear that her mind was focused. Her belief allowed her to look beyond the traditional approach mankind uses. For example, in both medicine and spirituality, she could look beyond the traditional approaches. She knew that through the beliefs of Unity that the physical, mental and spirituality (any condition in life) could be addressed, healing would occur on all levels (divine healing). In my opinion, Dr. Cady had a tremendous amount of wisdom, knowledge and God directed activity in her life.

Lessons In Truth has a study guide at the end of each chapter. The lessons are an excellent review and doing them will ensure you do understand the meanings and gain a true feeling for what metaphysical Christianity is. You will find in this book that the author was invited by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore , the founders of Unity, to write for them in 1892. Dr. Harriet Emilie Cady accepted. Readers demand for her writings and ultimately a simple course of lessons on the principles of divine healing, led Charles Fillmore to have them reprinted in a series of booklets. In 1903 the Lessons In Truth was published in book format. As of 1999, the fifty-first printing, the book has been translated into eleven languages and over a million and half copies have been sold.

Today, I am Methodist and have been for 20 years. I transitioned from a Baptist when I was 32. Methodist and Baptist belief's being very close to each other and different than Unity caused me to challenge my beliefs and weigh the differences very close. I believe it is urgently important for mankind to search deep within and to challenge his beliefs and actions regularly. I further believe this review and challenge process will keep man and woman walking closer to the path that they believe and will assist them in verbalizing their beliefs if and when they desire to express themselves. Lessons In Truth presents this challenge and leaves you thinking and asking many questions. Reading this book, you will gain an understanding of the principles of the New Thought movement in general and Unity in particular. Excellent fast read book and optional study guide. I highly recommend it for anyone attempting to gain an understanding of the unity movement or anyone walking within the faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars The light that you so crave ..., January 1, 2000
This review is from: Lessons in Truth (Hardcover)
Dr. Cady was a physician as well as metaphysician and her book is studied by thousands of Truth students all over the world. It has been translated into many languages and braille. Twelve chapters include Faith, Affirmations, Thinking, Spiritual Understanding, Statement of Being, and more. "The light that you so crave will come out of the deep silence and become manifest to you from within yourself, if you will but keep still and look for it from that source." (93)

5.0 out of 5 stars A down-to-earth explanation of basic spiritual laws, December 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lessons in Truth (Hardcover)
Emilie Cady was a remarkable woman; a true pioneer both professionally (she was a homeopathic physician in the late 1800's)and spiritually. Her understanding of metaphysical law, based in Christian theology, is clearly and profoundly stated in language any one can understand. I personally experienced a "spiritual quickening" while reading Lesson 11 on spiritual gifts. Her understanding of desire, its source and manifestation, clarified this issue for me and resonates as Truth. This book will benefit any truth-seeker, no matter what your religious affiliation is; truth is truth in whatever language you understand. Her writing style reminds me of Peace Pilgrim and I would recommend Peace's "Twelve Steps to Inner Peace."I also would recommend "The Light Shall Set You Free" by Dr. Norma Milanovich and Dr. Shirley McCune, as well as "Jesus Christ Heals" by Charles Fillmore.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gateway Book, January 27, 2007
This review is from: Lessons in Truth (Hardcover)
I discovered Lessons In Truth when I was about 16. Without reservation, it is one of those books that truly helped set the course for my life. Even reading it at that young age, every page was ablaze with inspiration, resonating with Truth that I already "knew" but had never read or heard.

Cady's faith, so strong and sure, is a healing elixer to the soul whose eyes have been opened to the inner path. All these years later I still find myself turning back to this book in my own times of doubt and uncertainty. What a strong and beautiful beacon Emilie Cady has been for me. I hope this book remains available for generations to come.

I've a tattered copy of Lessons in Truth by bedside. It has been one of the main spiritual resources sitting by the bedside... & I've read many spiritual books but always return this one. For if I'm feeling down, I just have to read the first chapter and I'm back where I should be: feeling one with God. That's great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Material, January 11, 2009

This review is from: Lessons In Truth (Paperback)
I read this book because it was suggested by a few other authors that I love to follow and who's ideals and opinions I greatly respect. Half way through the book, I realized that it would change my life forever. It has helped to gain a stronger relationship with God and it has changed my opinion of "religion" forever... and for the better. Many thanks to H. Emile Cady for writing such a spirit and life altering book.

This review is from: Lessons in Truth (Hardcover)
I first read this when I was a teen, and now, in my 20s, I still LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Emilie Cady has such beautiful archaic language, and yet her teachings are still as relevant as ever! I highly suggest this book to anyone.

This is an incredible book for anyone on a spiritual journey - written a very long time ago but the message is still so relevant; a timeless classic. The kind of book you keep on your bedside table and refer to often, especially when faced with questions and challenges in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book of Spiritual Principles, July 17, 2011
By
This review is from: Lessons in Truth (Paperback)
Dr. H. Emilie Cady, born in 1848, accomplished quite a bit alone in becoming one of the first female physicians. She was inspired by the teaching of individuals such as Albert Benjamin Simpson and developed an interest in metaphysics and spirituality. Lessons in Truth is a wonderful book, presenting 12 lessons in practical Christianity. This book is a wonderful source of teachings and guidance. Long ago, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, the co-founders of Unity, heard of this book and traveled to New York to meet with Dr. Cady. Over time, this book has become the most referred to book at Unity and has been published by Unity, although Dr. Cady wrote this book with no particular religious faith in mind.

I attend Unity of Oak Park, IL and it was our Rev. Helice Greene who refers to Emilie Cady's works in so many of her wonderful lessons and that inspired me to get this book and read it. I wish I'd done so long ago. It's a beautiful and essential piece of work and you need not be of the Unity faith to get a world of spiritual value out of this book. It's a smaller book, my 1939 copy has 144 pages and I found once I read it, I wanted to read it again - perfect to keep on the nightstand for some great spiritual reading before bed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book a 5, product page has in-accuracies., May 15, 2011
Lessons in Truth (with linked TOC)

My rating for the book itself is a 5; it's wonderful for many reasons.

(Long story, short.) This book is for anyone that is willing to test out spiritual principles on their own lives to see for their own selves the truth of the principles. It is best done with a supportive community with a foundation of prayer and meditation. There are many books and centers where anyone interested can learn spiritual tools and be with people of like mind and try it out for themselves.

CLARIFICATIONS FOR THIS PRODUCT'S PAGE

1.) I downloaded the sample to my Kindle for PC app, and compared it with my Lessons in Truth, 1999 hardback.

No, this Kindle version DOES NOT HAVE the study guide. So please, just let people know this. Even though this Kindle version is just $1.99 it IS important to note this fact. The study guide at the end of each chapter is an excellent resource in classes studying this book and for independent study.

2.) Unity (formerly called Unity School of Christianity) and Unitarianism (UUA, Unitarian Universalist Association): Not interchangeable. Not the same church or center.

Either perfectly valid for a spiritual seeker, but please folks, don't mix them up. Different founders, different approaches, different headquarters, different ways of doing things, both very inclusive, but different organizations. Really, just GoodSearch or Google them to learn about either.

In the section near the bottom of the product page (the Amazon Booksellers' Rank section with the links), this book is listed under Unitarian/Universalism. Really, Lessons in Truth is a foundational book to Unity, not to Unitarianism, so please fix this. No reason to confuse anybody out there looking for reading materials.

Thanks!!
