5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting must read for all! - A powerful masterpiece!
This is an exceptional piece of work. I am inspired by Ms. Thomas' ability to bring to life the truth about our people in the most interesting and fascinating way. The book does not have a negative or rebellious overtone. Instead, it is a history lesson that all Americans will do well to study, Lest we forget and repeat the horror of it all.

3.0 out of 5 stars not for the serious history buff !
The book is kind of cute, but is not for anyone serious about the history of slavery. It would be great for your kids if they are writing a book report on slavery,as it contains cute little pop ups,(thats your interaction),and is mild enough for children to read.also,if you are like me and are looking for historical fact with as little objectivity as possible, this would not...

This review is from: Lest We Forget: The Passage from Africa to Slavery and Emancipation: A Three-Dimensional Interactive Book with Photographs and Documents from the Black Holocaust Exhibit (Hardcover)

The interactive aspects of the book add to its appeal. Bringing history to life so today's generation can feel the experience of our ancestors through images of slave cargo, maps & insurance papers, replicated receipts for the sale of a slave woman, advertisments for the return of runaway slaves, and the most shocking -marks on the back of a slave from bullwhips. I found the discussion of their plight encouraging to me as I deal with the daily stuggles of being black in America. It gives me strength to know that our ancestors endured a merciless existence and yet they celebrated, and we can too!

The book is appropriate for the young and the old. It is a wonderful gift idea that will be enjoyed for years to come.

I must say that this book is a must for every classroom (or a nice addition to any personal collection). Readers can touch, tie, and read authentically folded replicas of various documents. One of my Seventh Graders brought in her mom's copy. Now there's one in my school's library and one in my classroom! This represents a new direction regarding books on history.

My daughter enjoys reading and interacting with the book. It is a must have for all races and ethnic groups. It's EVERYONE'S history, not just African-American history. I have shared the book with many people of all races and they have enjoyed and bought the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars LEST WE FORGET!!!, February 22, 2003
This review is from: Lest We Forget: The Passage from Africa to Slavery and Emancipation: A Three-Dimensional Interactive Book with Photographs and Documents from the Black Holocaust Exhibit (Hardcover)
This book gives dimensional insight to those not only wanting to read about the horrific history of slavery, but also, have pieces of history, that are tangible, to lift from the pages and look at. It is a good book to add to a collection of other books about a period in African American, and American history.
I also wanted to comment on reviewers Alice, who said the book was "cute," and Karen, who liked to "peek" at the items in the book. The book gives the reader a glimps about slavery and the atrocities that African Amercian people suffered in this country during that time period, and still do because of it. There is definitely nothing cute, or delightful to peek at, about this book, but you can learn from it.

For bringing into reality my ancestors experience in which I can touch, hold and know.

Thank for putting together such a wholesome and needed tool in which I can share the history of my people with my children.

Thank you for having the wisdom, the insight and the strength for producing such a prolific heart wrenching book.

Thank you for giving me something of which I can look at and know that no struggle I ever have or ever will endure can't even measure a a drop in the bucket of what my ancestors encountered.

That we, as a people, should stand proud of where we came from and remember the sacrafices made to get us here.

Thank you for remembering and bringing the truth of who they were and how they lived back into the world.

Peace,

Margaret Johnson-Hodge

The book is very informative. I now know that some slaves was very expensive. I was astounded by the picture on the front of the book. This type of treatment should never happen to another human. No matter what the color or nationality.

"Lest We Forget" is a totally unique book. As the subtitle suggests, it is a three-dimensional, interactive book on the history of African Americans from capture to emancipation. With photographs and documents from the Black Holocaust Exhibit, it provides a tactile, touch and feel, show and tell sense that no other book can offer. It is like a visit to a museum in your own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice conversational piece, May 20, 2007

My neice got this book as a present from her mother-in-law and after viewing it I just had to get myself a copy. If you are from the Caribbean and especially if you are black you must get a copy of this book. It's good for young ones for history and it is not boring, very interactive with replicas of the slave ship, etc.

It's a wonderful piece for the coffee table as a conversational starter.

I ordered this book because I am very proud to be of African decent, and want to make sure that this story is shared with generations to come. I feel that it is important for our children and their children to have a historical reference to connect them to our heritage.
