Book Description

6 and up1 and up
Everyone in the Fizz family is an artist. Everyone except Lester, whose paintings are pitiful and doodles are drab. Lester doesn’t think he’ll ever be an artist, until the day a mouthful of gum becomes a work of art on Lester’s talented lips. Drawing inspiration from all directions, Lester develops his special talent for artful bubbles and blows the competition away!

Full of wordplay, tongue-in-cheek humor, clever art references, and notes about the famous works referenced in Thor Wickstrom’s exuberant illustrations, this is a delight for young artists and bubble-gum fans.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–2—Artists all, Lester's talented family shush him as he pops his bubble gum in their favorite creative spaces. A strange occurrence in his Uncle Edgar's studio finally sets him on the path to Art, and he develops his artistic gift with bubble gum. The story is endearing; readers will root for Lester to one-up a competitive cousin and win an art contest. They'll worry when his front tooth falls out. But there are many subtleties that will fly right over their heads. Lester's relatives have names like Winslow, Dorothea, and Vincent. Friends are named Georgia and Frida. Wickstrom's clever illustrations imitate or allude to the works of these famous artists. (In one scene, Lester blows a bubble that looks like a cow skull.) The pictures have plenty of kid appeal, but most of the visual puns will be lost on children. Some of the language is sophisticated: "Suddenly, a powerful breath rose inside Lester. His belly bulged…. His limber lips labored and his face turned fuchsia." The words make delicious sounds; the meanings can be unraveled with the help of the illustrations. As they listen to, inspect, and enjoy Lester Fizz, youngsters will wonder why the adult reading aloud is laughing so hard. Maybe they'll be curious enough to find out, and teachers may want to use the book to introduce modern Western art.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Funny and With Teaching Moments - a review of "Lester Fizz", November 6, 2008
This review is from: Lester Fizz, Bubble-Gum Artist (Hardcover)
Lester Fizz has a problem. He is a member of a family where every one has exceptional artistic talent. There's Frieda, Winslow, Edgar, Cornell, Pablo, and Georgia just to mention a few. And their styles vary from everything from abstract painting to collections to photography.

Lester's problem is that he hasn't found his style and medium yet. And he remains the only Fizz that hasn't been recognized as an artist. That ends one day when his Uncle Edgar (Degas look alike) advises him: "The way I see it, Lester, anyone can be an artist. Look at this sculpture. What do you see? What don't you see? What do you want to see?"

Lester takes that lesson to heart and is delighted to discover that his talent is manipulating bubble gum. But his elation is soon quashed when he has to compete in an art contest against his nemesis, Cousin Cornell. A situation complicated by the fact that Lester looses a tooth right before the competition!

Besides the humor inherent in bubble blowing as high art form, there's a real chance here for some art education and a darn nice theme, that sometimes you have to hunt around to find out what you are good at.

My children (boy and girl gum enthusiasts; currently 6 and 8) really enjoyed this book I liked that various art styles were demonstrated and that there were representations of the artists and their works at the end of the book along with an invitation for kids to see if they can "I-Spy" the artists works on other pages.

Overall, a good story, and an excellent opportunity to expose children to art. The AR (reading level) as given by Perma-Bound is 2.0 and the Interest Level is 1st thru 3rd Grade. Also, a Good Read-Aloud.

"He took a deep breath. His belly bulged. His tongue trembled. His limber lips labored and his fact turned fushia."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, great writing, great illustrations, September 25, 2008

This review is from: Lester Fizz, Bubble-Gum Artist (Hardcover)
Both our 8 and 6 year olds enjoy reading this book and I enjoy reading it to them. The story is both clever and fun and the writing is poetic yet accessible. The illustrations enhance the story and are as fun and dynamic as the story is.

Some kids' books are well-written, others have a fun story and others teach values. Rare is a book that can do all three as well as this one does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book for Kids, Parents, and Teachers, August 19, 2008
This review is from: Lester Fizz, Bubble-Gum Artist (Hardcover)
As a parent and a teacher, I love this book! I'm sure it will fast become a favorite with its young audience; it's kid-friendly, hilarious, and affirming. Teachers will appreciate adding a book to their libraries that will make students laugh, but can also be used in countless lessons. The art references which enrich the text and illustrations can be launching pads for creative writing prompts, art projects...the possibilities are endless!
