5.0 out of 5 stars An essential record by the world's greatest sax player, October 20, 2002
By
This review is from: Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
The day was November 28,1952. Pres was 43 years old and still playing like mad. Of course, there is some sadness in his playing, and there will be more and more sadness and despair, all through the records, until his death,March 1959. But he's still swinging like nobody ever swang. He blows the most amazing phrases ever blown on "Just you, just me","Indiana","Tea for two","sunny side of the street".Oscar Peterson, piano,Barney Kessel, guitar,Ray Brown, bass, and the great J.C.Heard,drums give him a fantastic support here. This group of four musicians is just one of the most terrific rhythm section that ever was.The combination of Brown,Kessel and Heard produces one of the most swinging support you'll ever hear. And Oscar's playing is absolutely amazing.
I've allways considered Pres as the greatest jazz artist of all times, with Billie Holiday.I love each and every tune he recorded, even in the final years. There are an incredible swing,a surrealistic poetry and an exceptionnal imagination in his playing.I think that nobody ever played music with such a talent, and such a fragility at the same time.He is one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century's music. And you won't be desappojnted by this record, even if you think that he wasn't able to blow anymore in the last years of his short life. The greatest poet of jazz delivers some of his most beautiful solos here, and you'll be crazy to miss them. And you'll even hear him sing on "two to tango";the only time he sang during a recording session. And you'll be terrified by his version of "these foolish things". Even if this record is rather expensive, don't miss it,it would be a dramatic mistake; this is really an essential recording in Pres' career. And a great hour of happiness.

This review is from: Lester Young with the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
This album pairs the Lester Young with Oscar Peterson and his band so you probably don't need me to tell you it is great... but just in case, it is great.

I think that this is some of Lester Youngs best and most beautiful playing. As a bonus this features him (singing!!)"Two to Tango" which you just have to hear before you die.

It's too bad it is so expensive but trust me this is worth the price. Instead of buying the Thigh Master 2000 spend the (money) on this... you'll thank me (Besides you know that the Thigh Master will just collect dust under you bed next to the Ab-Roller and the rest of your exercise equipment).
