British history teacher Trow clearly enjoys writing his period mysteries about the Scotland Yard inspector Sholto Lestrade; his latest (after Lestrade and the Brother of Death, Forecasts, Oct. 4) is stuffed with enough broad humor, bad puns and knockabout physical humor to delight an audience of nine-year-olds. Unfortunately, in this outing the author's enthusiasm isn't contagious: neither Lestrade nor the murders he is investigating provoke much interest. The inspector is supposed to be a seasoned professional, a man of intelligence who has consorted with the likes of Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales, but as he struggles to find a pattern behind a series of corpses found with strange objects stuffed into their mouths--a soldier with medal, an archeologist with a scarab, etc.--Lestrade seems more like the bumbling Inspector Clouseau than Holmes's occasionally worthy adversary. The investigation is further complicated by Lestrade's long-standing friendship with the main suspect--an affectionate but hot-headed young man. It's 1897, and--as Trow tells us when Lestrade meets Dr. John Watson--the exploits of the "late and legendary Sherlock Holmes" are being "embroidered and indeed invented by Watson's coauthor, another quack by the name of Conan Doyle: "Conan the Barbarian, as one reviewer had called him." You don't have to be a Holmes purist to flinch at the line, and Holmes fans may be put off by Trow's version of the English Inspector. Nonetheless, others may enjoy the novel's strong period setting and loopy humor. (Dec.)

When a horse steps on his foot during public celebrations of Queen Victoria's Jubilee, it's only the first of the problems that will beset Inspector Sholto Lestrade of Scotland Yard, hero of Trow's lively series of period mysteries (this being the eighth). A royal Guardsman is found drowned in the Thames with a war medal stuck between his teeth; the body of an eminent Egyptologist is discovered, an exotic amulet similarly positioned. ``The Curse of the Pharaohs,'' Lestrade's colleagues murmur, while corpses keep popping up, and the inspector undertakes an arduous investigation during which he dons a diving suit, rides with the Yorkshire Hussars, ascends in a balloon, and endures the lascivious attentions of several remarkably forthright women. Lady Randolph Churchill shows up, as do Dr. John Watson (Sherlock Holmes having gone to his reward), the vertically challenged police officer Little Boyd Blue, and ``civilian balloonist'' brothers Gerry and ``Sally'' Mander. One understands why Holmes considered the affable Sholto something of a twit (he commits horrendous wordplay at the drop of a clue, even pronouncing an excitable butler a ``fervent servant). All ends entertainingly, though, as a well-concealed double-surprise finale unmasks the unlikely murderer, leaving Lestrade free to pun at large and investigate again. -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. "GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS!" Better than Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes," believe it or not! Who knew Inspector Lestrade would outshine Holmes and & Watson? Lestrade does not perform near-miracles like the competition, but perserveres through hard detection of a great many years experience grounded in reality and not bolstored by a chemical solution to perk up the gray matter. It takes the great inspector longer to tie up the loose ends, he does it with great humility and if he does not get due credit, he accepts it as working for human-kind and justice. You really must read all of the Lestrade novels and loan them to your friends and neighbors if they are home-bound or better yet, tell them about http://www.amazon.com/ and show them how to find subjects that interest them and give them a brief lesson on operating the computer and getting on the internet if they have yet to discover? They'll turn of their television sets and save money not go to a motion picture theatre when they have the real thing in these books that are difficult at best to put down!
