5.0 out of 5 stars Why were they not all over the charts?, May 19, 2005

The Call is a band that seemed to have it all together except marketing. They worked with members of U2 and Robbie Robertson, a song of thiers was used in the vampire movie The Lost Boys. If you are going to buy one album of theirs (I have them all) I would recommend this one. Solid musicanship and deep lyrics make The Call one of the best bands of the 80s. They weren't trendy, so they still sound good today. Give it a try!

5.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated!, October 8, 2007

This is one of the best groups from the 80's. Not one bad song on this album. Some of the most moving, varied songs and beautifully written lyrics... the other reviewer is correct to say - if this group was marketed well, they would a top hit group. Talent and looks, what more can you want in a rock band? The album can be had for very little these days. Pick it up and give yourself a treat. You will be floored. Way under-rated, I say.

5.0 out of 5 stars R.I.P. Michael Been, August 19, 2010

Leader/vocalist/guitarist of The Call, father of Robert Been (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) as well as the sound engineer for BRMC, Michael Been has passed away at the age of 60. No official cause of death has been announced and all the information we've gotten thus far has been from foreign news sites translated. Here's what we know about this very sad event:

Michael Been, sound engineer and father of bassist Robert Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, was unwell Thursday in the backstage area of Pukkelpop. "The first aid was immediately administered by the workers of the Flemish Cross and the doctors present backstage." says festival organizer Chokri Mahassine. "The Medical Emergency Team was immediately on the spot." He was rushed to the Salvator Hasselt hospital where he later died.

Our hearts go out to our close friend Robert, his family & the band.

RIP Michael Been.

Perhaps the best known song in The Call's expansive excellent library was the title song on "Let The Day Begin." It came closest to cracking the Top 40 (and only "The Walls Came Down" ever charted the top 100, giving The Call exactly two charted singles), and it became the theme song for one Al Gore during his bid for the Presidency. It is deservedly an anthem from the decade. Yet why couldn't The Call capitalize on all the acclaim?

That is a question better left for philosophers and pop trivia addicts. But for some reason, The Call never exploded in the way many of their biggest fans (like Bono, Peter Gabriel, Martin Scorsese and Harry Dean Stanton) predicted they would. Stanton even contributes a harmonica solo on "For Love" and Scorsese would soon cast lead singer Michael Been in "The Last Temptation of Christ." "Let The Day Begin" is filled with the kind of big songs that The Call is best known for, like "You Run" or the storming "Same Old Story."

As usual, Been's lyrics are loaded with Christian allegory, some blatant ("For Love"), some not so much (the beautiful "Uncovered"). His reach was always high, and while his success never seemed to make his grasp, his music rarely missed the mark. "Let The Day Begin" is a big 80's album - and sounds it - standing with The Call's best works.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Call Record, November 6, 2011
This review is from: Let the Day Begin (Audio CD)
This album starts out strong and it just won't let up! Great songs throughout. The highlights are the title track,Surrender, When, Jealousy and uncovered. I remember seeing the band at the Fillmore West in 1989 and they are still one of the best bands I have ever seen live. MCA did not promote The Call and essentially they left the band out to dry.
