Take the time to find this CD,

This was the album that nearly made Mason an outright star. It still didn't quite happen, but it definitely should have. The three charting singles - "So High", the title cut and "We Just Disagree" (His only major hit) are all highlights, but you can get all of those on "Long Lost Friend". The remainder of the material, particularly the self-penned songs are just as strong and make this one of his best efforts - not quite up to the all-conquering power of "Alone Together" but pretty close. It is a softer album, with a lot of accoustic guitars, and fantastic vocal harmonies, but it also has a lot of energy and passion. Mason's skills as a singer, writer and guitarist are too often overlooked, so don't let his undeservedly low profile keep you from discovering some of the finest pop/rock of the 70s.

Underrated 70's gem,
This review is from: Let It Flow (Audio CD)
Dave Mason, while never being a critical success seemed during the mid 70's to have found a little niche for himself. Nice guitar work and strong vocals throughout mark this as one of his finest outings. The title track, "So High" and "We Just Disagree" are obvious finds, but "What Do We Got Here" has always struck me as a simple yet compelling song of lovers who just aren't quite sure that this is the one. All in all not the album of the decade, but an enjoyable listen for fans of Traffic, Spencer Davis Group and of softer guitar rock.

FOnd Memories of Years Gone By,
By Ron Janke (Calgary, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Let It Flow (Audio CD)
In the mid to late seventies I was greatly influenced by my older sister's record collection. Through her I had my first savory taste of Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens and Rick Wakemen. So when, in 1978, she married and moved away, I found myself lacking for more "adult" music than what was available on the local AM radio stations. After a couple of years I went to visit my sister and her husband, and while there checked out their music. What I found was an absolute marvel; Dave Mason - Let it Flow. As an amateur musician I lost myself in Dave's intricate playing. And, as a normal male in his early twenties, Dave's lyrics really hit home; heartache, loss and hope all resonate with Mason's voice. This is an excellent album that I highly recommend to anyone that has any appreciation of "good" music.

Dave Mason has never been known for his guitar playing as much as his singing. But I think it should be the other way around. He is one of the tastiest players ever. This cd showcases his vocal abilities more but listen to "Takin' the Time To Find" and you'll hear great guitar playing, it's undoubtedly one of the best songs he has ever done. If you can get ahold of "Certified Live" you will hear even more great guitar playing.

Dave Mason / Let it Flow: All but a couple of these tunes were radio standards in the late 1970's and yet, these day, Dave is all but absent from the airwaves and practically unknown to a generation of music lovers. Dave, and this album, deserves more respect. This is a terrific album and it earns Five Stars.

Let it Flow revisited,
This review is from: Let It Flow (Audio CD)
I listened to "Let it Flow" alot while matriculating 78-82. This is a great CD especially if you like to sing along. My kids asked the other day if it was religous music and I can see their point. The music grabs your attention and keeps it from start to finish. I think I need to find some more Dave Mason especially his live version of "All Along the Watchtower".

There's nobody like Dave Mason,

I just learned that Dobie Gray wrote one of the songs on this CD. Listened to his version and it's as if it was forever meant to be Dave's song. Sure, this CD has his biggest solo hit, but I like the other songs even better. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Get it!

That iPod! makes it accessible,

I have revisited this album after many years of unintentional neglect.
Actually, I mistakenly believed I had this title in my extensive CD collection and thinking, when I ripped Dave Mason's, "Greatest Hits" The Definitive CollectionCD onto my huge gigabyte drive--I thought that the tunes, "Then It's Alright," "Mystic Traveler," "Seasons," "What Do We Got Here," all of the songs onto the "Let It Flow" assemblage were included in this compilation. They are not. This CD, "Let It Flow" could have been termed his greatest hits, all songs are outstanding. So, I went out hurriedly, snapped up this album and ripped it to my iPod. Now I am happy. Thirty years ago when this album came out I was a sprig yet this album is timeless in its musicality and lyrical content. By the way the tune, "Then It's Alright" might be an anthem for today's malaise onto the political scene--the corruption and stupidity infused--"don't matter which way He surely will pay the price cause your isolation Could weaken a nation So take someone's hand and together we'll stand...." But is it alright? I don't think so but "We Just Disagree." |
