Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A choppy, sometimes rhyming picture-book ballad that attempts to present the life and words of Martin Luther King, Jr. Livingston picks and chooses events from King's life, blending them together into unfocused and stilted verses: ``Entered Morehouse College when he was just fifteen./ Married to Coretta Scott, dreamed how the world could be./ Finished up his schooling, started in to preach./ Lord called him to the pulpit. Moved to Montgomery.'' Excerpts from famous speeches are pasted together and incorporated into the text; although these quotes are identified at the back of the book, their appearance in the narrative creates confusion about whether they belong to the author or the subject. Static watercolor illustrations, which are not presented in chronological order, look like painted versions of historic photographs. They fail to capture the passion and emotion of the dramatic events depicted. Young readers, inexperienced in history or biography, are more likely to be confused than compelled by this haphazard, incomplete, and uninspiring portrait. --Joy Fleishhacker, New York Pub . Lib .
