The availability of contemporary technology has increasingly allowed the synthetic sounds of the 80s to inhabit the DIY aesthetic. The Royal Bangs maximize on this cybernetic collision on "Let it Beep," resulting in an energetic garage-band quality that belies its more synthetic aspects. At its most prominent, this aesthetic recalls the sequenced arpeggios of the DX7 and the days of quarter video games, and at its most subtle, there is a distinct backdrop of drum programming.

The guitar sounds, however, are noticeably raw, and there is no mistaking that human hands are involved. The guitar riffs and rhythm section grooves on "Let it Beep" often propel the album along, and their disorienting, angular nature often verges on math-rock (a plus, in my opinion). When the Royal Bangs turn it on, as can be heard on the frenetic "Brainbow" or the slammin "My Car is Haunted," the results are electrifying.

"Let it Beep," however, does suffer somewhat from a lack of consistency. For example, "**** Xmas," has some fleeting guitar work that reinforces the band's math-rock aesthetic, but overall it feels like filler. Additionally, I generally find The Royal Bangs' instrumental side much more compelling than their vocal. Lead vocalist/synthesist Ryan Schaefer plays keyboards impressively, but sings kinda.....adequately.

THE LOWDOWN: The Royal Bangs can easily fit within the mold of recent "David Bowie-approved bands." Fans of TV on the Radio and The Arcade Fire who are looking for a more intense approach should look no further.

This album is their best to date, in my opinion. It rocks hard, is catchy, diverse and has a full and eclectic sound. A bit of a new-wave throwback, but not enough that it's sounding like '80s redo. This has been my "playing it far too much lately" album. VERY good stuff. Good for fans of Passion Pit, Sunset Rubdown, MGMT, Death From Above 1979, Of Montreal... that genre. Awesome album. Stuff you can chill to and DEFINITELY dance too.

I had never heard of this band, but they showed up as a recommendation on Groove Shark, and it's incredible. Trying to describe their sound makes them sound kind of lame (indie electro garage punk?) but just give them a listen online. Apparently they were discovered by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, so that's a pretty good endorsement.

Key tracks: Poison Control, S*** Xmas, Waking Up Weird. I really like the percussion on Waking Up Weird. They throw some goofy electronic sounds in every once in a while that sound like SNES sound effects. If that sounds kind of lame you are mistaken. It's kind of cool.

Wow,
Royal Bangs have it, this is some really fun catchy music. But never so catchy it's gross. Really enjoyed it, though I liked We are Champions better.
