However, PolyGram was not the only label interested in signing the New Jersey singer; Atlantic had head-hunted him too. Derek Shulman was adamant that PolyGram should sign JBJ and the band. Jon, his family and the rest of the band were impressed by Shulman’s commitment. His background as a musician didn’t hurt either. He had been the lead singer of 1960s British pop group Simon Dupree And The Big Sound and then formed prog rockers extraordinaire Gentle Giant. Shulman instinctively knew that JBJ was a global rock star in the making from the very first time they met. It was obvious from the start that it was JBJ’s band, as Shulman attests: “Jon did in fact want to be signed as a solo artist with his band in tow. PolyGram ultimately signed all the players of the band but initially it was Jon’s deal. Rightly so, as it was he who put everything together for the deal to happen… He absolutely knew he wanted this to be a rock band. He had already put this showcase band together and we both wanted the band to be a band not a solo rocker. He ultimately stuck with the group of musicians who performed at the Copacabana.” With a demo that was destined for cult status, a record deal and a band, JBJ’s plan for world domination was in the making . JBJ had also gotten a name for his band; the rather unimaginative: Bon Jovi. Lots of names were thrown around but none of them seemed to stick. It was Derek Shulman who came up with the idea of shortening Jon’s second name Bongiovi to Bon Jovi thus taking a leaf out of Van Halen’s book. This meant that both Jon Bon Jovi and his band could be marketed more effectively with a catchy name. “I remember saying to him in 1983: ‘Someday you’ll be President of the United States of America,’” Shulman recalls. “He laughed, but with a glint in his eye. I still stand by that statement.”
