Editorial Reviews

"Dr. Larry Burk's Let Magic Happen is surely one of the most fascinating autobiographical accounts ever written by a physician. I could not put it down. Dr. Burk describes how he passed through the eye of the needle, going from a dedicated materialist--a radiologist, no less--to a physician whose expanded vision of healing includes not only the body but consciousness and spirit as well.
-- Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words and Reinventing Medicine

"Larry Burk, M.D., has been a pioneer in using the imaging technology of modern medicine combined with ancient healing techniques. Let Magic Happen is a wonderfully honest and uplifting look at what it takes to create good medicine and true healing using all the wondrous modalities available to us."
--- Christiane Northrup, M. D., author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom

More About the Author

Dr. Burk did his medical school and residency training at the University of Pittsburgh, and was former associate professor of radiology and director of integrative medicine education at Duke University Medical Center. He is a Certified Energy Health Practitioner, and is also certified in clinical hypnosis and trained in medical acupuncture. He is a former board president of the Rhine Research Center, and is currently president of Healing Imager, Inc. in Durham, NC, specializing in teleradiology and EFT. His scientific articles, newspaper columns, newsletters and video blogs are posted at www.letmagichappen.com.

Larry has experienced many magical synchronicities in his career and life that have guided him along his journey. He was a pole vaulter in college, and his musculoskeletal injuries led him on a quest for healing that included, shaking medicine, shamanic journeys with a jaguar and after-death communication with angels. After talking about these adventures for years, he decided it was time to write them down. Many of his healing stories stem from mind-body-spirit techniques that he was privileged to learn from numerous generous teachers. He looks forward to sharing the magic with sincere seekers everywhere.

Let Magic Happen
Lawrence Burk, 2012

The book is so engrossing that I almost finished it in one sitting. On the surface, it recounts a transformational journey from traditional medicine and science towards an expanded paradigm of true healing and additional modes of scientific thought. Superimposed upon that framework, however, are at least two other storylines that are magnificently interwoven: first, the limitations of the traditional scientific and medical "box" and what is required to free oneself from those constraining and energetically draining places (e.g., stop trying to change the system; instead, just get out of the box); and second, it is an educational and ultimately a very practical book about various alternative wellness and health promoting modalities. Thus it has an authentic and coherent "self-help" component, a "tool-kit" so to speak that others might pick and choose from.

As a fellow traveler of Larry's while we were both teaching at Duke University, I was blessed by his generous and wise guidance over many years and by his ever enthusiastic mentoring in the art of "living" authentically (instead of just "thinking" my way through life, being then, as I was, "all in my head"). He also taught me the efficacy of experiential learning and alternative approaches to health and wellness.

Ultimately, with his help, I took a healing journey as well. As Larry once said, "Jean, the universe literally had to beat you over the head (referring to a traumatic brain injury) in order to get you out of your head." What a useful perspective and how true. Another insight he shared was equally right on, "Jean, if you feel like someone has [...been abusing you, as when the sharks of academia start circling], then probably that's true.

Let Magic Happen is a terrific read. Larry Burk's journey shows how, over time, he opens up his mind to alternative healing methods. He shares many personal stories of how various mind-body-spirit techniques such as Anodyne Imagery, the Chinese Five Elements, Emotional Freedom Techniques, and many others are effective in healing various injuries and illnesses, both physical and emotional. He begins as a medical student brought up in the typical US-based western perspective of using drugs, surgery and equipment to diagnose and heal people, but over time learns from first hand experiences that many ancient techniques prove to be very effective in healing people. Why don't more doctors embrace these techniques? This is a must-read for everyone.

Let Magic Happen: Adventures in Healing with a Holistic Radiologist
Dr. Larry Burk, a radiologist whose career path has gained him respect in the world of academic medicine, has expanded his knowledge and experience beyond traditional medicine's usual limits. His educational and professional qualifications are impeccable, and his courage is admirable. One of the things that make this book so interesting is Dr. Burk's generosity in sharing his own experiences as he describes his discoveries and adventures in the world of alternative and complementary medicine, and he tells his story in an intriguing and well-documented way. He begins with stories from his medical school days and continues right up to the present. I appreciate the fact that he supplies us with copious references, and the references are placed at the end of each chapter rather than being relegated to the very end of the book where I would have had to keep flipping back and forth searching out the ones I wanted to find. Dr. Burk even added a how-to section in the appendix describing the "top ten" alternative techniques. I have highlighted something on almost every page in my copy of the book! My bottom line is that Let Magic Happen: Adventures in Healing with a Holistic Radiologist is a firsthand guide to many complementary and alternative healing modalities, and it is so interestingly written that it was hard to stop reading until I got to the very end.

I confess I was apprehensive about wading into "Let Magic Happen - Adventures in Healing with a Holistic Radiologist" by Larry Burk, MD, because I felt I didn't have the kind of scientific mind necessary to understand his journey as a doctor and radiologist. I was happily wrong! This book is an amazing, inspiring and fascinating journey of a man pursuing both sides of himself - a brilliant man of science and a visionary spiritual seeker. Larry describes in amazing detail how he navigated through -- and built bridges between -- the conservative world of academia and science and the mind-expanding and assumption-challenging world of parapsychology, energy medicine, and spirit.

Larry starts with a description of the early days of radiology, and the implications of our bodies having detectable energy. His curious mind and inquisitive spirit nudge him ever onward, talking to everyone, being open to everything, asking questions, bringing people together, making something bigger happen.

He described himself at one point as having the archetype of the "joyful networker," and the truth of this is borne by his absolute fearlessness in talking to anyone about anything. He's inspired by someone he hears at a conference, and so he asks them to lunch. His genuine interest in people and their ideas is irresistible, and his ability to bring people together is truly a gift.

Not everyone is as enthusiastic as he is about the questions he is pursuing, however, and his navigating through the "shark" infested waters of academia and some medical circles is instructive and extremely entertaining. Larry learns from everything and everyone, and continues to look for ways of bringing the different worlds together.
