If you're a Virginia Tech football or Frank Beamer fan, this is a good read, but it likely won't change your opinion about him. Most people already know that he's not about flash, but that he IS about results. Regardless of how you feel about his coaching, you can't deny his overall success with the Virginia Tech football program, and you can't deny that Frank Beamer as a man is an outstanding individual. This book reinforces that image.

The book discusses some key events in Frank Beamer's development, from his perspective. It discusses his burn injury as a child, his interview and hire at Virginia Tech, and how people thought he was crazy when he said his goal was to win a national championship. He hasn't won one yet, but he did play for it once, and Virginia Tech is in the discussion of top teams every year.

I found the most interesting parts of the book to be those about his feelings about Michael Vick, and his offer at UNC. These passages reinforce the overall emphasis on Beamer's character.

If you're looking for a gift for a VT football fan, and they already have VT football tickets, this would be a good choice.

Successful Head Football Coach! Genuinely nice guy! Frank Beamer is both. And this book describes both sides of the man.
Frank Beamer has done a lot for Tech. I've been on the faculty during his tenure here and served as President from Fall, 1993 through January, 2000. I was able to see first hand the excitement of our fans during this period. I know applications for admission increased dramatically. Alumni support has been enhanced. Soon after I arrived at Tech, we had a fund raising goal of $75 million. We recently completed a campaign which raised over $1.1 billion. There is currently an excitement on the campus that did not exist two decades ago. Frank Beamer is a significant reason for this excitement. The book in a simple, conversational mode tells the Frank Beamer story. And after obtaining a copy of the book, I had to wait three days before I could begin to read it. My wife had grabbed it first and told me to wait.

I've been very critical of our football team these past few years. I have to be honest, I've even said some terrible things about our team and some of our coach's. After reading this book, it really gave me insight as to why Coach Beamer is the way he is and does the things he does. It also opened my eyes to the fact that I should never open my mouth and criticize others as I will look foolish considering my football knowledge is laughable compared to Coach Beamer. I have a new found respect for this man. Not only did I learn about Coach Beamer through the book but I've learned so many lessons from his stories that I plan to implement some of these things to better myself. I'm proud to be Hokie, even more so today having a great leader and person at the helm of our football team. Living in San Diego, I hope to one day get back to Blacksburg and shake his hand or even play a round (if he's ever in San Diego maybe I could take him to play Torrey Pines for a round). Now let's get him a National Championship! Go Hokies!

This is an honest read with character and integrity. Frank was brave to have exposed himself. After reading it you have to have a little bit of "Hokie" in you. Fortunately having gone there and played there around that era I could appreciate it even more.

I was a student at Virginia Tech (M.A. 1993) when Coach Beamer suffered through that 2-8-1 season in 1992. I thought for sure he would be fired. Needless to say, the school, the football program, and college football as a whole, are better off because he was given a chance to right the ship. This is a great book--full of history, insight and compassion. I had always appreciated Coach Beamer and thought highly of him as a football coach and man, and now having read his full story, I have even more respect for him. This is the best sports autobiography I have ever read. His discussions of the Michael Vick situation and the horrific shootings of April 16, 2007 are worth the price of the book.

Tremendous life story of a coach of highest integrity. Great insight into the life of a man who believes in the importance of teaching young men values they will carry with them for life in and out of football. This is not just a football book. This is a study in how to prepare for the game of life in any endeavor. Everyone should be able to learn important lessons from this book.

I loved this book and recommend to true football fans - a clean football program run by a person of honor and what's best for his players. Does not make a lot of money but does the job because he loves it. Great read.
