Editorial Reviews

No one would argue that Ann-Marget's principal entertainment skill was as a vocalist. So it may seem a bit finicky to point out that this well-packaged, 21-track retrospective of recordings from the early and mid-'60s actually is not the best anthology of her music. That honor belongs to The Many Moods of Ann-Margret (on the Australian Raven label), whose selection is considerably more pop/rock-oriented (which is not to say that it rocks very hard). Let Me Entertain You focuses more on her sultry sex-kitten pieces, which lean more toward pop-jazz and standards. Only half a dozen of the selections overlap with The Many Moods of Ann-Margret, though, so fans have the option of picking up two compilations which share the wealth fairly equitably. This (like the Australian import comp) has her two most famous numbers, "Bye Bye Birdie" and her lone Top 20 hit, "I Just Don't Understand." Much of the rest cranks up the floor-show ambience considerably, the saucy version of "C'est Si Bon" being a special highlight. -All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertain me! entertain me!, July 19, 2003

Swedish-born Ann-Margret Olsson is the epitomy of '60's sex appeal, and her music purrs, coos, growls, snarls, and shakes it up. This is the package to get: it's got better selections AND hotter photos than it's counterpart "The Very Best of...". It's also a more compact package to haul around than the Bear Family box-set from Germany..although, if you become a rabid fan like I did off of this one, you'll want the box-set soon. Fabulous in all respects, Ann-Margret's a one-woman Lovin' Spree.

Let Me Entertain You is a very good CD by Ann-Margaret. Ann-Margaret's fame was truly in the 1960s; but just one listen to this album proves she was really a fine singer. The artwork is very well done and the quality of the sound is perfect. Great!

The album opens with Ann-Margaret singing "Bye Bye Birdie" from the show of the same name. Ann-Margaret sings this with a good amount of style and I think she went through a lot of trouble to sing those flat notes just right! SMILE "Let Me Entertain You" features Ann-Margaret's vocal talents much, much better. Ann-Margaret has great talent and she night have been one of the great chanteuses of the twentieth century if events hadn't worked out the way they did. Anyway, listen also for "There'll Be Some Changes." "There'll Be Some Changes Made" features Ann-Margaret squarely in the spotlight--and that's all right with me! The arrangement complements Ann-Margaret's vocals rather well, too.

"Something To Think About" showcases Ann-Margaret's ability to deliver a song full of romantic innuendo and the strings are used to great advantage. "The Good Life" shines and sparkles when Ann-Margaret takes over and sings this out so well! Ann-Margaret aces this without the slightest effort and her excellent sense of timing enhances her performance considerably. "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" again proves just how good Ann-Margaret really was at singing a song; there's a dated line or two but this Ann-Margaret's rendition is very strong and it holds its own very well.

"That's What I Like" is another romantic slow tune just perfect for dancing with your sweetheart all alone in your living room late at night with the lights down low; and "Heartbreak Hotel" shows how well Ann-Margaret could cover even an Elvis tune! The harmonica really spices up the arrangement and overall "Heartbreak Hotel" is a highlight of this album. In addition, Ann-Margaret bats yet another tune straight out of the ballpark--"C'est Si Bon" is very well performed and Ann-Margaret practically owns this after she puts her own stamp on "C'est Si Bon."

"I Wanna Be Loved" is an excellent ballad that Ann-Margaret does with heart and soul; and there's also another great performance when Ann-Margaret performs "It Do Me So Good." Ann-Margaret never skips a beat!

Overall, Ann-Margaret could really sing! I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ann-Margret: Simply the best, May 29, 1999
This review is from: Let Me Entertain You (Audio CD)
If you can't afford the box set quite yet, settle for the next best thing. "Let Me Entertain You" showcases A-M's earliest recordings with RCA...her vocal style was never matched and to this day she still remains an underrated pop icon! Songs like "Thirteen Men", "I Just Don't Understand", and "Bye, bye Birdie" are just a few of the songs that will make you want more of this legend...oh and if you haven't yet GO BUY THE BOX SET!
