Swedish-born Ann-Margret Olsson is the epitomy of '60's sex appeal, and her music purrs, coos, growls, snarls, and shakes it up. This is the package to get: it's got better selections AND hotter photos than it's counterpart "The Very Best of...". It's also a more compact package to haul around than the Bear Family box-set from Germany..although, if you become a rabid fan like I did off of this one, you'll want the box-set soon. Fabulous in all respects, Ann-Margret's a one-woman Lovin' Spree.

Let Me Entertain You is a very good CD by Ann-Margaret. Ann-Margaret's fame was truly in the 1960s; but just one listen to this album proves she was really a fine singer. The artwork is very well done and the quality of the sound is perfect. Great!

The album opens with Ann-Margaret singing "Bye Bye Birdie" from the show of the same name. Ann-Margaret sings this with a good amount of style and I think she went through a lot of trouble to sing those flat notes just right! SMILE "Let Me Entertain You" features Ann-Margaret's vocal talents much, much better. Ann-Margaret has great talent and she night have been one of the great chanteuses of the twentieth century if events hadn't worked out the way they did. Anyway, listen also for "There'll Be Some Changes." "There'll Be Some Changes Made" features Ann-Margaret squarely in the spotlight--and that's all right with me! The arrangement complements Ann-Margaret's vocals rather well, too.

"Something To Think About" showcases Ann-Margaret's ability to deliver a song full of romantic innuendo and the strings are used to great advantage. "The Good Life" shines and sparkles when Ann-Margaret takes over and sings this out so well! Ann-Margaret aces this without the slightest effort and her excellent sense of timing enhances her performance considerably. "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" again proves just how good Ann-Margaret really was at singing a song; there's a dated line or two but this Ann-Margaret's rendition is very strong and it holds its own very well.

"That's What I Like" is another romantic slow tune just perfect for dancing with your sweetheart all alone in your living room late at night with the lights down low; and "Heartbreak Hotel" shows how well Ann-Margaret could cover even an Elvis tune! The harmonica really spices up the arrangement and overall "Heartbreak Hotel" is a highlight of this album. In addition, Ann-Margaret bats yet another tune straight out of the ballpark--"C'est Si Bon" is very well performed and Ann-Margaret practically owns this after she puts her own stamp on "C'est Si Bon."

"I Wanna Be Loved" is an excellent ballad that Ann-Margaret does with heart and soul; and there's also another great performance when Ann-Margaret performs "It Do Me So Good." Ann-Margaret never skips a beat!

Overall, Ann-Margaret could really sing! I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ann-Margret: Simply the best, May 29, 1999
This review is from: Let Me Entertain You (Audio CD)
If you can't afford the box set quite yet, settle for the next best thing. "Let Me Entertain You" showcases A-M's earliest recordings with RCA...her vocal style was never matched and to this day she still remains an underrated pop icon! Songs like "Thirteen Men", "I Just Don't Understand", and "Bye, bye Birdie" are just a few of the songs that will make you want more of this legend...oh and if you haven't yet GO BUY THE BOX SET!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just another pretty face, October 22, 2000

Ann-Margret is perhaps the quintessential '60s sex goddess. Beauty and talent wrapped up into one delicious package. One quick glance at the cover of this album and you quickly realize the delightful treat you are in store for.

While Ann-Margret is predominantly known as a sexy, swinging chick of the '60s, there's more than meets the eye on "Let Me Entertain You." She's not the best singer, but she's by no means a beauty out trying to prove she's not just another pin-up girl. Besides being a rather credible actress (review "Carnal Knowledge" if you haven't seen it in a while), Ann-Margret is a singer with a rather pleasant voice. Her range isn't far, but her vocals are strong enough for the type of tunes she tackles on this compilation.

Among the 21 sexy hits this kitten with a whip croons are "Bye Bye Birdie," from the film in which she starred, "The Lady Loves Me," from the rousing Elvis film "Viva Las Vegas," in which she co-starred and the title track from the film "Gypsy."

"Lovin' Spree," "What Am I Supposed to Do" and "Slowly" are all standout tracks. But it's the bluesy, fuzz-guitar, harmonica-laden classic "I Just Don't Understand," that comes out on top. A 2 min. and 37 sec. rush of mass erotic seduction.

This kitten purrs and entertains as promised, leaving the listener with a wonderful feeling - equivalent to that of a libidinous body rush.

If you even think you like Ann-Margret, rush out the door and down to the store and buy not one but two copies. One to listen to and one because there ain't no more! The Sex Kitten can make you shake your groove thing. I was lucky enough to have older cousins in the sixtes who were big Ann fans. I got to listen to all her old albums as a little child. But to try to borrow them now. No way!!!!!!!!!! So I had to start my own collection. Try and find an Ann-Margret album of CD. Look for gold in the kitchen sink, too. This was the first CD I found and what a Find. There were will never be another sex-kitten. Listen to her as she purrs over some of the old classics and gives a life to others. The only missing link-"Baby it"s cold outside." I hear she made a recording of this song. It will be a hot time when I find it!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars She Entertains!, April 15, 2001

This CD is a perfect example of AM's career: it is a beautifully packaged CD (with "groovy" photos) that contains some condesending lyric notes from Marisa Fox. Unlike many sex symbols, AM began singing in nightclubs; true, her seductiveness added to her appeal, but she had the talent to back it up. This long overdue CD shows AM's singing talents with such songs as ""More Than You Know" (better than Streisand's dull version) and "The Good Life." However, AM's best songs were excluded in this compilation: her "Begin the Beguine" ranks with Johnny Mathis's definitive version, her "Baby It's Cold Outside" with Al Hirt is sexy and funny, and her "Bachelor in Paradise" version was introduced on the Academy Awards Show. To really judge AM's talent, you need to buy the boxed set. However, who's quibbling when you get AM on CD?

4.0 out of 5 stars the kitsch kitten delivers, May 19, 1998

I suppose they had to include "Bye Bye Birdie" on this collection, but by placing that song first they mislead the listener. That song is classic B-movie stuff, but it seems like screaming compared with the smooth effervescence of the rest of the album. A better first choice would be the Ann-Margret's purring version of "Let Me Entertain You," "C'est Si Bon" or "Lovin' Spree". These are the tunes that let you sink into the couch, falling into the Kitten With a Whip's spell.

It's worth mentioning that the single "The Lady Loves Me" is an amazing entity in itself. It's well documented (in Ann-Margret's autobiography, as well as other sources) that the lady and Elvis Presley had a fabulous affair during the filming of "Viva Las Vegas". Their real-life chemistry crackles through the film, and they steam up this single. It's worth the price of the album in and of itself.

Let Me Entertain You is a perfect encapsulation of martini kitsch. ("Thirteen Men" in particular, fits this categorization: "Last night I was dreaming/I dreamed about the H-bomb/Well the bomb went off/And I was caught/I was the only girl on the ground/There were 13 men and me/the only girl in town".) But it's her spellbinding, pre-grrl-power sexuality that permeates her songs, along with her dynamic performance persona, that defies these easy simplifications.

This CD compiles some songs from Ann-Margret's stint with RCA Records. She is a good singer, and recorded several good songs, but had very limited success. The great "I Just Don't Understand" was the only real hit song she ever had. But like I said, she recorded many other good songs, with several of them being on this CD. If you are a fan of Ann-Margret, you will be sure to enjoy this CD.
