Editorial Reviews

Review

His poems seem to move with a brute force of their own. ... These poems vibrate with a disturbing, powerful energy. --Chautauqua Literary Journal

Gaylord Brewer's poems are fiercely original. --Asheville Poetry Review

What's most remarkable is the way Brewer presses such chiseled, economical lines into the service of a voice that is so flexible, lively, and dramatic. --Cold Mountain Review

Brewer is a master of technique. There are no false steps, no misfit poems. This performance melds moxie and desire and, believe it or not, love. Gaylord Brewer is a poet who has hit his stride and shows no signs of faltering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brewer Does It Again, May 9, 2006

This review is from: Let Me Explain (Paperback)
Gaylord Brewer's "Let Me Explain" is his finest work of poetry since "Devilfish," one of the best reads of the last ten years. In this one, Brewer finds his stroke by writing one apologia after another on a creative range of subjects and to a variety of people. We see the world through Brewer's dark yet sweet lense, whether it is buying melons, being inflicted with stigmata, or grading papers. If you like Carver, Hugo, and crew, you will love the clarity and beauty of the writing here. Iris Press has also done a lovely job with the production of the book. The cover, a wistful razorback hog gazing into the uncertitude, says it all.

This little volume of poetry is delightful. Brewer's language is lively and fun. This is poetry with attitude. This poet is one even high school students have to love.
