Biography

Joy Division formed in Salford (near Manchester, England) as an immediate reaction to punk: to be precise, singer Ian Curtis, guitarist Bernard Sumner and bassist Peter Hook decided to pursue music as a direct result of seeing the Sex Pistols famously play at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976. Forming eventually as a foursome (with drummer Stephen Morris) in 1977, Joy Division would… Read more in Amazon's Joy Division Store

Editorial Reviews

UK only Official Live disc is interspersed with rare interviews of all the band members. The live songs were recorded in various European locations including rarities from Dutch and Belgian concert performances along with a couple of rare alternative studio outtakes. 26 tracks in all including performances of, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', 'Leaders Of Men', 'Failures', 'Novelty', 'New Dawn Fades', 'Ice Age', 'Shadowplay', 'Passover', 'Transmission', 'At A Later Date', 'Digital', 'Colony', 'Auto Suggestion' and 'Dead Souls'. The rare audio interviews include all members of Joy Division, some of which have never seen the light of day before plus spoken word contribution on one number from Martin Hannett. This is an official release and 25th anniversary of Ian Curtis's death and the soon to be released movie based on his life. The eight page fold out full colour cd booklet contains lots of Joy Division images and a detailed biographical article on the band. Interstate Records. 2005. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some great concert moments, but don't buy for the short interviews, May 23, 2006
This review is from: Let The Movie Begin (Audio CD)
While Young Mario's review of this CD is rather accurate (the interviews are awful... a couple are ok, but many are in a crowded room of people talking, and they are sprinkled throughout as if one idea will lead into the next song, which certainly is not the case) I found the live tracks great to have. I'm also not sure why "Love Will Tear us Apart" was highlighted, especially since the first few seconds was somehow missing, and upcut with some annoying sound bite: "right, we all start when the drum machine starts, lets---" and then the beat FADES in. However, I think the live version of "Ice Age" makes this CD worth it alone; sung in unison w/ other band member(s), this already energetic cut has an extra almost punk edge that reminds me of something Agent Orange would do.

The Amazon review mentions an "eight page fold out full colour cd booklet"... keep in mind that it is an eight PANEL fold-out, meaning four squares total. However it does contain one of the first interviews of the band typed out by Mick Middles in 1978, which was a nice bonus. I'm not going to give this CD a 5-star just because it is Joy Division, which I think some people may be tempted to do. I paid an import price, so if you can find it for around $10 then it's definitely worth it. And of course, for the JD collector/enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horrible interviews, January 12, 2006
By
Young Mario (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Let The Movie Begin (Audio CD)
The interviews on this dic forthe most part have to be run by an EQ to hear the the heck Ian Curtis is saying. As fo the music some track appear in other cds like Still or Les Baines. The Love will tear us Apart track is worth getting the cd for. A good addition to the true Joy Division fans collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars The LP is great artistically, but lacks sound quality, June 5, 2008
This review is from: Let The Movie Begin (Audio CD)
I recieved my LP set today and this is a big dissapointment. I loved listening to Joy Division when I was younger. The interviews are horrible, and the music is recorded much too high of a level. Sounds like a recording of a cassette on a boombox, or when you try to recored music using your cel phone. In these days of digital remastering and 180 gram vinyl this LP is total disrespect to Ian Curtis.
