Shannon at her Best!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Let the Music Play (Audio CD)
This album is one of my favorites that I have. Every song on this album rocks. She also does a very great job of showing her different styles and abilities. To tell you the truth, I really don't like dance music, but ever since I heard Shannon's songs back in 1984, I was hooked to her beat, voice, lyrics. I believe that the lyrics in her songs are one of the most compelling things that lured me to her and this album. Many dance songs from other artists lack a story or meaning or substance...just boom boom boom...but NOT Shannon's songs...they are rich with substance in her lyrics and music. I definitly rate this album a STRONG BUY!

Can't get enough of The System, who share labels with Shannon or Madonna or the Pet Shop Boys?Well you'll find music
alot like those artists here.'Let The Music Play',both the compulsively kinetic song itself and the album, are perfect examples of the genre of dance-pop;heavy,spiky synthesizers, industrial strengh beats and big bassy backrounds!Add with that big, catchy tunes like "Give Me Tonight","My Heart's Divided", the rockin' "One Man" and the funky "Sweet Somebody" and you've got a big enough musical platter to keep the music playing ALL the time!Just be warned it'll be VERY hard to sit down!

It may be a short CD, but there's no filler. Outstanding, definitive 80's CD.,

I'm sure most people who rate this CD highly are like me- people who were clubbers in the 80s, or at the very least had an affinity for 80s dance club music. While the title track most exemplifies that definition, and "Give Me Tonight" and "My Heart's Divided" too were found in the club circuit, "Sweet Somebody" and "It's You" were always my favorite songs from this CD and I was dumbfounded as to why they were shorted when it came to radio play. How many times me and my girl at the time snuggled or slow danced to "It's You," I can't begin to tell you. And admittedly it carries sentimental power for that reason. But like "Someone Waiting Home" it's a beautful ballad, a wonderful 80's melody. To contemporary clubbers, this CD may seem a dinosaur, and to be fair, in musical composition it is relatively dated. But judged on it's own merit, for a short CD it has absolutely no grizzle, and consequently just flies by when listening to it. I always found it a total shame Shannon was incapable of producing as solid a follow up, or any CDs with similar acclaim or appeal. But that's the industry, and dance/club music is and always will be a fickle category. That said, if you're from this era and never listened beyond the radio play cuts, shame on you. Buy this CD! If you're eclectic in taste or a contemporary fan of dance music with an appreciation for it's evolution, ditto. The 80s had some not so well promoted jewels that are being brought out of the closet with today's technology, and this CD is proof.

Awesome! 80's music ahead of it's time,

"Let The Music Play" is the first of a series of awesome albums. I wish that her other two albums were available on CD. "Do You Wanna Get Away?" and "Love Goes All The Way" the music in all of these albums was too hard for most listeners in the 80's, but Shannon paved the way for future techno music with a unique R&B touch.

The most beautiful thing I've ever heard!,

Great music! Shannon's voice is sweet and soothing, but it is the vocals of chorus singer Jimi Tunnell, that make this album incredible!

Let This Music Play....and play again.,

Hearing "Let The Music Play" for the first time in 1984 was instantly hypnotizing and intoxicating at the same time. The "scratch" and extreme "bounce" of this track was way before its time and certainly outmatched any catchy dance tune of its day. The title track definitely blends in remarkably well with today's modern club beats and dancefloor-ready jams. Several remixes of it have blossomed, but the original has power of its own to challenge even the most club-popular dance tracks. The additional songs on this disc equally support its hitmaker title and at the same time do fine justice all on their own. "Give Me Tonight" could be the fraternal twin of "Let The Music Play". "Hearts Divided" is a cardio-blessing and the slight down-tempo of "Sweet Somebody" is simply.....sweet. Shannon's first album is indeed a pure dance classic and delivers such great motivation to the mind. In addition, Shannon's vocal style and arrangement simply adds grace to the already perfect rhythm maneuvers and dance-ready energy of this disc. Small in track numbers, what's there is enough to transport you into a self-motivational state and onto the dancefloor.

Shannon's "Let The Music Play" was one of 1984's most well-received and commercially successful Dance/Club music albums. Both the title track and the perenially popular "Give Me Tonight" became club classics and made this album an international success. While Shannon was not in the same league as Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor or Loleatta Holloway this CD is highly recommended to any fan of '80s Dance Music as it is a classic of its time.
