5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic author who surprises at every turn!
I am a new reader of Jo Goodman, and I am sad to find that many of her older books (which aren't really that old!) are out of print. Jo Goodman is a great author and deserves to have all of her books on the shelf!

Elizabeth is a modern woman with modern views, the fact that she called herself a whore and still held a trace of innocence is not believable that first kiss tells you all. It is 150 pages too long.If you like steamy sex scenes this book has plenty.

I am a new reader of Jo Goodman, and I am sad to find that many of her older books (which aren't really that old!) are out of print. Jo Goodman is a great author and deserves to have all of her books on the shelf!

This book is the first in a quartet about four boyhood friends known as the "Compass Club." It is set in England in 1818. In this tale, we learn about Northam, aka, North. Ms. Goodman's books are a great change of pace from traditional, heroine-centered, historical romances. In this book (and the next in the quartet), we learn more about the life and love of the hero, while the heroine is shrouded in mystery and secrets. I am not often fooled by an author, but Ms. Goodman stunned me several times in this book with her plot devices. And just so you know it's not a fluke--the next book in the series had even more surprises for me!

This is a fantastic book with lots of interesting characterizations. The men in this book seem so much more realistic--they are funny and witty, but not hard-as-stone. They all have feelings and sometimes they even let them show, ha, ha. Ms. Goodman deserves high praise for writing such an engrossing, intriguing novel. If you want a page-turner, this is a great one to keep you up all night, wondering what will happen next!

5.0 out of 5 stars She's back......., September 23, 2002
This review is from: Let Me Be The One (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
Yes, finally Jo Goodman is back. The first line in the book had my attention! The heroine had a strong personality with some unexpected turns. I also like the hero, North, and his companions (South, East, and Marchman - soon to be West).

Not since the Dennehy sisters has Jo written such original storylines.

Pick this book up, you won't be disappointed. Welcome back Jo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Jo, September 27, 2002

Let Me Be The One is a wonderful, romantic, very steamy book, the first in a set of 4. Lord Northam is a very strong, virile leading man, and Elizabeth is smart, witty and strong woman. Together they make an unbeatable pair, as Lord and Lady Batteman find out. I can't wait for South, East and West's stories. I hope Lady Sophia, who we have yet to meet, shows up soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 5 STAR Plus Book!!!! Perfect story!!, August 26, 2004

This review is from: Let Me Be The One (Zebra Historical Romance) (Paperback)
When I hear about a series I always try my best to read them in order. I was very frustrated to find the first in this series "Let me be the one" to be out of print. It was very difficult to find this book but WELL WORTH THE HUNT! This is my favorite kind of book. The main two characters really fell in love. They did not expect it Lord North was not looking for a wife when he seeked out Elizabeth at house party. But with each conversation between the two they found something in one another that intrigued them - and slowly but surely you just felt their relationship sizzel and come alive! Libby had major complications in her life that she felt had put her totally on the "shelf" so they like to say. But North was a smart enough man - and had the courage to really see Libby for what she was and not what she thought she had become. It just is so romantic and there is just enough intrigue with looking for the "Gentleman Thief" and of course the relationship between the Compass Club four! If there is any way you can find this book - it is a wonderful story - and a must read! Truly one of the best books I have read in a very long time!!

I loved this book. I keep reading it again and again, because some of the subleties are easily missed. It's intelligent, well-written, and well worth the time it takes to find it.

This is a passionate love story of two people that come together and must learn to forgive the past. North is drawn to Elizabeth from the beginning, but she does everything in her power to run him off. He won't take the hint.

He instinctively knows that something is wrong in Elizabeth's life. Something he might be able to fix if she will only trust him.

Elizabeth is not going to trust anyone because she been burned too many times. She is attracted to North, but sees herself as a whore and worse. She views herself as someone unworthy of the dashing North.

North show extraordinary patience in getting Elizabeth to trust him. He proves to her that true love can stand the harshest test and still survive.

I recommend this book highly.
