5.0 out of 5 stars no one knows, January 3, 2008

I cant beleive what a secret this album is, I know that I look for obscure metal for a hobby, But I never met anyone else that heard of this one by Vital Remains. And thats a shame because this is well oiled well executed death metal. The kind of death that you can turn someone on to that doesnt care for death, Its really that good, that any fan of metal will give it the horn salute. Everytime I listen to this I get into it, its got a smooth, old school doomy production that takes the harshness out, but be forwarned it is still extreme, but it pleases the ears, another slightly different line-up but everybody is on fire..great metal !

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal! Brutal! Brutal!, August 31, 2005

What more can I say about this CD than those 3 words. This is Vital Remains first major label CD(recorded for Deaf Records) and was recorded during the peak of death metal(December 1991). This CD came out when most of the death metal was either coming out or being recorded in Florida at Morrisound Studies. VITAL REMAINS(from Rhode Island) proved that you also had to have talent to actually have a CD worth listening to. From my understanding, this CD has some songs that were originally on their demos and 7" records that only hardcore Vital Remains fans possessed(What songs are those? My mind goes blank but I want to believe they are FROZEN TERROR and OF PURE UNHOLINESS).

During the early 90's, the Vital Remains style was quite original because they didn't rely on being the fastest or the most inaudible or the craziest(even though their live shows might convince you otherwise). They weren't afraid to slash and burn through a part of one song and then slow it down to a heavy rhythmic crunch while accenting it with guitar solos. Each member possesses great talent and this CD shows it.

My favorite songs on this CD are "War in Paradise," "Of Pure Unholiness," "Malevolent Invocation," and "Frozen Terror." The rhythmic yet poundingly aggressive guitar work of Tony Lazaro and Paul Flynn mix perfectly along with the haunting keyboard of I don't know who, Joe Lewis's thumping bass, Ace Alonzo's heaving hitting drumwork and Jeff Gruslin's deep grunting and growling. "War in Paradise" is one of those songs that I feel can be the anthem for what death metal was in the early 90's.

This is another one of those CDs you can tear down a house to. If you don't own this CD and INTO COLD DARKNESS(Vital Remains last CD with Jeff Gruslin), then you need to get it. TODAY!! If you have and hate it, then real death metal isn't for YOU!!!

this is one of the bands which helped to pioneer american death and black metal
and among the others like hellhammer, celtic frost, bathory, slayer and venom(whom i hate!) these guys are the most undeservingly ignored!

tony lazaro didn't get "noticed" untill the album "forever underground" (a poetic truth) but didn't get famous until bringing glen benton of deicide fame in as vocalist for the albums "dechristianze and "icons of evil".

i started to notice them with the album "dawn of the apocalypse" unfortunately the vocalist for this album didn't last very long due to becoming a right-wing redneck,
pompous stage-ass and drug addict which led to him getting fired mid-tour.

real!ty check: most real satanist' don't believe in the use of hard drugs nor do they believe in racism, period!!

if you own this you are blessed if not....
