Book Description

March 1, 2009

Private investigator Jack McPhee has a two-word business philosophy: no partners. Rules are allegedly made to be broken, but Jack didn't expect that a contract to nab the so-called Calendar Burglar would force him to team up with a ten-pound, hyperactive Maltese.

Or that as McPhee Investigations goes to the dogs, he'd fall deeply in-like with Dina Wexler, an undertall groomer, whose definition of a P.I. comes from watching w-a-a-y too many detective shows.

Or that his absolutely genius idea to catch a thief would make him the prime--and only--suspect in a cold-blooded, diabolical homicide.

More About the Author

Suzann's mother taught her to read at age four, assuming a tomboy couldn't have her nose in a book and get into trouble, simultaneously. It didn't work, but somehow, Suzann's insatiable curiosity, smarty-pants mouth, tendency to make up stuff and love of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden novels became the basis of a diverse writing career.

Suzann (www.SuzannLedbetter.com) is a Writers Hall of Fame of America inductee and received a Western Writers of America Spur Award for her biography, NELLIE CASHMAN, PROSPECTOR & TRAILBLAZER. Suzann was an editor-at-large for Family Circle magazine for over a decade and is a client of Greater Talent Network, an international talent agency.

In April 2006, Suzann's short story "How To Murder Your Mother-in-Law" will appear in Avon's DEADLY HOUSEWIVES anthology. May marks publication of her latest suspense/caper, ONCE A THIEF (Mira) and in August, SHADY LADIES, a biographical collection of 19th century nonconformists is due out from Tor/Forge.

Suzann and her husband share their Missouri Ozarks home with three retired racing greyhounds, two morbidly obese cats and way-more books than the children's library her mom hoped would tame the ornery streak Suzann allegedly inherited from her father's side of the gene pool.

4.0 out of 5 stars amusing romantic mystery, March 8, 2009
This review is from: Let Sleeping Dogs Lie (Mass Market Paperback)
The insurance company hires private investigator Jack McPhee to investigate a string of robberies that has cost them a bundle of payments to insured clients. After reviewing the case file, Jack sees one thread; each of the victims owned a pet and was away at the time of the break-in. He theorizes the culprit works at a kennel.

His clues lead to dog groomer Dina Wexler, who needs a lot of money to pay for her ailing mother's exorbitant medical expenses. Jack figures that is the obvious motive, but has nothing concrete that would convict Dina in court. However, he soon has a more pressing issue to investigate when someone murders his ex-wife with the police suspecting him. Though he always goes alone, Jack teams up with the groomer and a hyper Maltese to solve the robberies and the homicide that he believes are linked.

This over the top amusing romantic mystery will have the audience rooting for the ten pound canine as long as the dog resides in someone else's neighborhood. The lead couple is a fun pairing as Jack wants no partners, but Dina gives him few choices. Fans will laugh at loud at the antics of the lead trio while lurking in the shadows is a clever killer watching their every move.

I agree 100% with BobsMom's "disappointing" review! Finished this only because I thought it had to get better at some point. Not up to Ledbetter's quality on the East/West/South/North series. I am going to read those again and check out some of her other books that have come out since that series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from Ledbetter, May 26, 2009
This review is from: Let Sleeping Dogs Lie (Mass Market Paperback)
This novel is another delightful and compelling read from author Suzann Ledbetter. Jack McPhee is a private eye who pulls you through his adventures with verve and flair. His dysfunctional relationships with women, dogs and clients are funny and yet oh-so-true-to-life. His sure-proof plan to nab the Calendar Burglar comes close to making him mark his own days off on a cell wall as he ends up making himself THE suspect in a homicide case. Throw a frenetic yapper of a dog and a new love-interest into the mix and you have a story that definitely does NOT go to the dogs! Read and enjoy this engrossing novel from a master storyteller.
