5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out: Two versions of this CD, How to tell them apart
There are two versions of this CD, each with the same title, which is causing a lot of confusion. One contains the full "Birth of the Beat" while the other has a shortened version but also contains five songs not found on either of the two original albums. The one with 20 songs (ASIN B0000011CX) appears to be out of print but contains the full version of...

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware
I am totally discusted with this CD. I bought it for one song "The Birth of the Beat" - A wonderful 10 minute performance. When I played it, I found out it was a cut down version (3 minutes). Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed.

The one with 20 songs (ASIN B0000011CX) appears to be out of print but contains the full version of "Birth of the Beat", while the one with 25 songs (ASIN B00000094I) has the shortened version but is still in production. Also seems as though reviews for either version of the CD appear for both, which is only adding to the confusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let there be drums & drums are my beat, December 29, 1999
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is GREAT CD, but be careful. This is not the original "Let There Be Drums" with the extended 15 minute drum solo. This is a "combo" album of Sany Nelsons 2 albums. The title as stated is abbreviated and does not clearly tell you that.

If the drum solo is not your main reason for listening to this great artist, then don't miss this great treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music but missing one important factor, February 5, 2000

This review is from: Let There Be Drums / Drums Are My Beat (Audio CD)
The music is terrific. If you like the big band sound this is a must have CD. But if you want the beautiful drum solo on Let There Be Drums, you're in for a disappointment. It is an abreviated 3 minute segment of the selection. But overall I'm delighted to have the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandy Nelson, January 2, 2004
By
Danny Pivano (Union City, NJ) - See all my reviews
Out of all of Sandy's recordings this album captures his most unique style. Teen beat 65 is proof of Sandy's way of making drums seem to come to life.
He is one of the very few drummers who has made such a personal impact on so many through out the years.
He changed the drumming world.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a Gen X fan, February 23, 2003

My CD collection consists mainly of albums from bands like Faith No More, The Prodigy, Regurgitator and Beastie Boys. So you'd wouldn't expect to hear someone like me rave on about Sandy Nelson. Thing is that when I was a 5 year old I use to beg my dad to put "Let There Be Drums" on the 33rpm player. The tracks are unforgetable and contain a rythym that bands these days hunt for in their own style of music. Maybe fellow 29 year olds won't agree but their parents should have played them Let There Be Drums to them when they were young! A must have album for those who remember wild beach parties in the 60's perhaps!

5.0 out of 5 stars A member of Gen X reviews this classic, June 6, 1999

From a person who's CD collection includes Beastie Boys, Fat Boy Slim and other non oldies type outfits, it comes as a surprise to many that I of all people should want this CD to occupy my CD player. But thanks to my old man I have really had the album "Drummed" into my head and glad I do. Memories of acting out the drum movements as a 5 year old in my bed as my dad had it playing on the 33rpm still remain strong! Should perhaps have more tributes dedicated to it... and after all these years (thanks to internet) I just learnt that old Sandy was in fact an amputee! Learn something new each day!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can find it, July 5, 2007
Buy The Import "See For Miles Records" It is very hard to find. But it has the extended version of "Birth Of The Beat" Between my dad and my brother and myself we must have worn out 8 LPs. I have bought 3 CDs of the import. I have two That I shared with my dad before he passed away and gave my Brother one. (Update) The Version with the extended version is very rare and very hard to find and might cost around $100.00 on E-Bay but I do not think it can be found as even here on Amazon no "Other Seller" is listed at this time, However You can here the extended version on You Tube

4.0 out of 5 stars Shows why Sandy Nelson should be in the Hall of Fame, February 23, 2009

[[ASIN:B00000094I Let There Be Drums/Drums Are My Beat
I love this CD. Sandy Nelson was the primary reason I became a drummer in the first place. He also inspired thousands of other young percussionists with his "Let There Be Drums" and other hits.
It is a travesty that Sandy Nelson has been kept out of the Drumming Hall of Fame. I understand that he is not considered the most technically proficient when compared to others, but his impact in increasing the visibility of modern popular drumming cannot be denied. Please email the Drumming Hall of Fame (google it) and ask that Sandy Nelson be inducted.

I purchased this CD for my nephew who's been playing the drums for about a year. He never heard of Sandy Nelson before...but listened to the CD over a dozen times the day he received it. He's thanked me over and over again for such a great, drum playing collection of music.
