Unlike the previous reviewers here, I wasn't aware of this wonderful album until I attended a panel session titled " Music, Activism and Cancer" in September 2012 at the Americana Music Conference in Nashville, which featured this album's Executive Producer, David Ross, as well as Dr. Alicia Alvarez and a couple of well-known songwriters and recording artists (who I'll mention in a minute). I subsequently got the CD and it's got some great music and is service a good cause.

The beneficiary of the proceeds from this disc is The Women and Cancer Fund, of which Dr. Alverez is a Board Member, a charity that supports "Alternative cancer treatments and research. As Dr. Alverez explained it, while we have not yet found a cure for cancer, music can act as a treatment. (None of this is - surprisingly, noted in the CD packaging but you can "Google" the charity for more info.

But, back to the music and what's on the CD. The 16 songs performed during the disc's 52-minute running time were all composed (or co-written) by Sir Paul McCartney. Some are Beatles' classics ("Lady Madonna" - where Phil Vassar gives it a soulful blues rendition - or "I Saw Her Standing There" - the icon Beatle's song given a hard rock and roll gender-bending take by Nikki Shannon Fernandez) but others are lesser known McCartney tunes served up fine by both well-known Nashville performers (SheDAISY; Timothy B. Schmidt) and a lot of talented folks new to me (Juliana Cole, Chuck Wicks, Samantha Landrum). I do wish that, rather than just "thank you"s from each of the artists, the enclosed booklet provided background on the lesser-known (but, again, talented) performers.

A few standout tracks, at least for me, were "Listen to What The Man Said", a bluegrass arrangement by Ricky Skaggs but featuring a accordion, and the closer, an instrumental version (the only one on the CD) "She's A Woman" by acoustic guitar whiz Tommy Emmanuel. (If you don't know TE, search for him on You Tube!). The only weak track (again, for me) was actor Jeff Daniels corny version of "Heart of the Country".

So if the word Nashville gives you the idea that the music styles are all the same, put that out of your mind. There's R&B and more here. The aforementioned Wicks take on "Mo More Lonely Nights" is, however, arranged as a perfect current country song.

So I highly recommend this 2011 album for those who just love great music as well as those who want to support a worthy effort. And, if you already have this disc, get ready. David Ross (and his team) has a follow-up album in the works that will be released in early 2013. Tentatively titled "Let Us In Americana", it will include more McCartney songs, this time performed by Matraca Berg and Allison Moorer (both who were on the above-mentioned panel) as well Moorer's spouse, Steve Earle and many others.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful!
