Soul Rebels are Amazing,
By
This review is from: Let Your Mind Be Free (Audio CD)
Picture yourself a first-time visitor to New Orleans, Louisiana in an out-of-the-way bar. You're there on the recommendation of a friend, not knowing what to expect. The bar is subdued, and most everybody's attention is on the TV showing the Buccaneer playoff game. You nervously ask the bartender in hushed tones, "Aren't the Soul Rebels supposed to be playing here?" He laughs and says, "Right after the game. What y'all gonna drink?" Bourbon, of course. You wait, and nurse your drink. Then a second. The game ends. Instrument cases appear from under tables. Men with trumpets, drums, sousaphones and trombones assemble in the corner. Just as you realize you were sitting with the Soul Rebels all along, you are hit with a wall of funky brass sound and rhythm unlike anything you have ever heard before. Consider yourself lucky. You have stumbled upon the house bar of one of the most unique and talented brass bands in New Orleans. The Soul Rebels combine New Orleans brass band sounds with the musical traditions of funk, rap, jazz, reggae and dancehall to create what can only be described as "amazing." I can't stop listening to this disk, and I can't imagine ever growing tired of it. The Soul Rebels revitalize the New Orleans tradition of great music and great musical talent. I only wish they had more than one CD in distribution. Buy this CD; you won't regret it. |
