Book Description

A gripping new romantic suspense from USA Today Bestselling author V.K. Sykes

The brutal murder of her twin sister drove Amy Robitaille into a career as a homicide detective for Palm Beach County. When a serial killer targets the wives of local baseball players, Amy has more than just a professional interest at stake—her only surviving sister fits the profile of the other victims. Amy’s hell-bent on catching the killer, not only to protect her sister but to destroy the demons haunting her since the death of her twin.

Baseball star and former soldier Luke Beckett has just retired from the game and is looking to move on with his life. When he’s asked to consult on the serial killer case for the local police, he finds the challenge he needs—despite the objections of lead detective Amy Robitaille. But Luke has no intention of backing away from the job and every intention of getting to know the intriguing detective.

Amy has no time to babysit a celebrity consultant while trying to catch a serial killer. But Luke is not the man she assumed him to be and he threatens to become a powerful distraction. That’s the last thing she needs, especially when the killer starts closing in on her family. But without Luke’s help, Amy stands to lose everything.

3.0 out of 5 stars Baseball and Serial Killer September 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition

If you like a book heavy on suspense and police work and lite on romance then this book is for you. I prefer mine the other way around. The book was enjoyable and Luke and Amy were well matched characters. Both had great tragedies in their lives because of which Amy has built very high walls around herself and has become very single minded and driven. Luke has chosen to live life. They are thrown together to find a serial killer who's killing baseball players wives.

Amy Robitaille is a hard wording, no-nosense homicide detective determined to catch those who terrorize others. After losing her sister at a young age, Robitaille has committed her life to solving crime leaving little time for anything else include a social life or a family of her own.

Luke Beckett is a former baseball star and ex-Marine. After all star performances on the field and serving over seas, he's enjoying early retirement by visiting children at a local Children's Hospital and taking up golf in his spare time.

When a naked and mutilated corpse is found in Palm Beach Country, the city goes on high alert for a killer living among them. When the cops determine the murderer may be targeting baseball players wives, they must pool all their forces to stop the killer before he claims his next victim.

In the most important case of her career, the last thing Robitaille needs is a famous pampered baseball star muddling the investigation, but Beckett has no intention of stepping to the side in this one. Robitaille and Beckett will need to combine their resources if they want any hope of stopping this killer. However, first impressions might not be quite as they seem, and the building sparks that fly between them may prove too great to ignore.

Will they catch this killer before he strikes again? As the evidence mounts, and the killer strikes closer to home, learning to trust each other may be a matter of life and death.

A gripping novel, V. K. Sykes hits this one out of the park! An engaging mystery from start to finish with a pulse-racing blend of suspense, murder, romance, and action. This is a must read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Story June 24, 2014

This was a great read from beginning to end. The characters were all very well developed. I normally don't read nail biter romance novels, however this was an exception. it had an incredible and believable plot.

Having worked in law enforcement I could totally relate to this story. I will be reading more books by V.K. Sykes.

The one thing I might mention is that the proofreading was not so great. There were some big flub ups that should have been corrected.

More About the Author

V.K. Sykes is really two people - Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes, a husband and wife team who write USA Today Bestselling contemporary romance. The second book in their Philadelphia Patriots Series of sports romances won the Kindle Book Review Best Indie Books of 2012 Contest, in the romance category. Vanessa also writes award-winning, Regency-set historical romance for Kensington Zebra under her own name. Her first novel, Mastering the Marquess, hit the shelves in April 2009, and she was subsequently named by Booklist as one of the "new stars of historical romance."

Vanessa was born a Jersey girl, but not in Tony Soprano country. Rather, she grew up in a gorgeous little colonial town just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. After completing her Master's in English literature, Vanessa headed to Toronto to enter a doctoral program, and stayed in the frozen north. Eventually, she found her way into the public sector, and spent many years writing reports and briefs.

Randy started out as a prairie boy, with a heritage in the starkly beautiful wheat fields of southern Saskatchewan, Canada. As a graduate student in economics, he migrated east to prestigious McGill University. After completing his Master's in labor economics, he ended up working in the public sector in the nation's capital of Ottawa. Writing endless reports and speeches honed his writing skills, but too often bored him senseless. When he finally turned his pen (or rather his keyboard) to fiction, life changed in a hurry. His "I can do this!" quickly became "Holy cow, this is hard!" And before he knew it, he was immersed in a strange land of romance fiction writers, almost all women, learning why books require such things as emotion and conflict to get readers to actually pay money to read them.

And this is where a romance-writing partnership makes such good sense. Do guys like to write about emotion? Not so much. Plotting? Yes. Humor? You bet. Murder and mayhem? Definitely. But when it comes to elaborating on matters of the heart, most guys would rather find a game on TV. Any game. Randy fits the stereotype. But, fortunately, he has the luxury of leaving those big blank sections for the emotion expert to work her magic. And strange though it might seem to Randy, Vanessa actually likes writing about emotion and (thankfully) doesn't mind doing the sex scenes, either.
