Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In the midst of an incendiary malpractice lawsuit, the Center for Fertility and Enhancement loses its brightest embryologist, Dr. Tim Sullivan, in a freak traffic accident. When a bomb destroys the lab and almost kills one of Sullivan's partners, Dr. Luc Morgan, remaining partner Dr. Ben McKay, an ordained minister, and Marnie Sullivan, Tim's widow, begin to piece together discrepancies involving Tim's determination to cure akenosis, a disease affecting his uncle, the President of the United States. As a Machiavellian plot comes to light, everyone connected to the clinic is in danger. Cutrer and Glahn, authors of two books on marriage and infertility, delve into the controversial world of cloning and genetics in relation to God's plan while offering a satisfying medical thriller suitable for most collections.

From Booklist

Cutrer's and Glahn's Lethal Harvest is a fine medical thriller centering on the apparent disappearance of one member, Tim Sullivan, of a partnership running a fertility clinic in Washington, D.C. Sullivan is related to the current U.S. president and, like him, carries a recessive gene for akenosis, a neurological disease that results in quick deterioration of motor function. When the disease begins to affect the president, Sullivan's death is faked by government operatives, and he begins accelerated research into akenosis using DNA implantation techniques. Meanwhile, one of Sullivan's partners confuses clones of discarded eggs (which, unknown to him, Sullivan was using for research) with the correct eggs for implantation, and twins that are clones of their mother result. A lawsuit arises, and the clinic is bombed, the mysteries of which fall to the third partner, Ben McCay, an obstetrician and chaplain, to unravel. Some of the thriller aspects of Lethal Harvest are shaky, but the authors' treatment of DNA research is so well informed and compelling that their novel should have wide appeal. John Mort

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed!, May 12, 2000

Jump in "head first" and be prepared to move with your mind in this thought stimulating adventure into a fictitious "never-a-dull-moment-could-be-real" world of a cast of characters who will quickly travel their way into your heart. As the co-authors reveal and develop circumstances in the lives of recognizable personalities, your emotions will be touched many times over,,,love, joy, compassion, grief, surprise, anger... This is a story of a group of individuals and their families, involved and affected by an infertility clinic's research, filled with hopes, dreams, dedication and devotion. By motivating the reader's thinking into the continually advancing medical abilities, this writing will encourage formation of personal and ethical considerations. A delightful reading experience,,,you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Attention-Grabbing Thriller, July 27, 2000
This review is from: Lethal Harvest (Bioethics Series #1) (Paperback)
Lethal Harvest by William Cutrer, M.D. and Sandra Glahn. Kregel Publications, 2000, 407 pages.

Looking for a vacation carry-on that will hold your attention even against airport announcements or bikini-clad babes? Wanting to sit glued to a good summer read to escape less-engaging activities? This fast-paced medical thriller fills the bill.

The genetic research and cloning which drive the plot come straight from today's headlines. If you recognize ambition, jealousy, grief, or compassion, the characters could be among your friends. The simultaneous revelation of story and character creates a tension between the potential good and evil of cutting-edge research. Are risks not inherent in true progress? Can a doctor's personal lust for status and power provide the needed dedication to propel his work? What degree of benefit for many justifies sacrifice of lives or personal relationships? Is there a point at which man's dominion and God's authority overlap?

Cutrer and Glahn have created a world so believable that researchers may want to cure their imaginary disease. You may struggle with the ethics of curing millions at the expense of a few. Ben and Marnie may remain your friends after the pages end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Christian Novel, September 4, 2000
By
James Harvey (Upper Marlboro, Maryland USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lethal Harvest (Bioethics Series #1) (Paperback)
Lethal Harvest is a compeling novel. The story blends genetic research and cloning with the decisions which must be made by the Christian physicians. Scientific decisions are very easy to understand. How far does the doctor/scientist go in developing cures for diseases while staying within the Christian ethics? You want to keep reading. It holds your attention from the first page to end. I would highly recommend for a home or church library.
