The Great White North has produced its fair share of upper echelon thrash bands over the years, Sacrifice, Slaughter, Razor, Annihilator, and the list goes on. What we have here in this debut album from Toronto's Mastery is proof that this country can still thrash with the best of them.
If you can't already tell Mastery plays thrash metal, riff driven, heavy as all hell, blazing old school thrash the way it was meant to be... but with a twist, that being it is entirely instrumental. I found the lack of vocals on the album to be a kind of a double edged sword. On one hand there are no lyrics so the listening is forced to concentrate on the guitar clinic on display, but on the other it creates a feeling that at times you are listening to the same song, I rarely noticed the songs as they changed, with only silence as a real sign that a song had come to an end. Thankfully though the record is strong enough overcome that possible setback, the musicianship is remarkable, blistering hyper fast riffs that you could use to strip paint complemented by a truly pummeling drum and bass section, the drums in particularly are masterfully played (no pun intended) by Kevan Roy utilizing a 26 piece monster drum kit that live is just plain fun to watch well if you can stand the drool coming from Em at the time (oh come on like I could resist that). The album has an almost metal on metal kind of production that is very mechanical in nature. The bass level I feel could have been a little higher as there are times when it's almost buried, but this type of muddy and gritty overall sound to the album surprisingly works. Those who are able to appreciate thrash, or those who like their music dirty, heavy, and very very fast will absolutely adore this album and I think they'll agree with me that this is yet another great contribution to the Canadian thrash legacy. -- By Brent Lockman

Awesome Thrash/Speed Metal,

I got this album awhile ago. I put it in my CD player and was blown away. I like the fact that there are is no singing. They are brutal and fast. If you like Slayer you will like this band too.
