Canada is home to many places with wild, wacky and witty names -- come explore them in Let's Call It Canada. Journey from coast to coast to coast with award-winning author Susan Hughes as she discovers the best stories behind Canadian place names, and illuminates Canada's incredible diversity.

Young readers will meet some of Canada's earliest settlers, its bravest heroes, its most cherished leaders, and its most dangerous renegades. They'll learn about place names that come from Native myths, local legends, Black history, and spooky ghost stories.

Let's Call It Canada is a delightful look at the places, people and events that have made Canada what it is.

Themes include: - Kanata: Names from the First Peoples - Not from Around Here: Named After Famous Non-Canadians - Lions and Tigers and Bears - Oh My: Birds and Animals That Lend Their Names - A Little Bit of Home: Names from the Early Settlers - It Happened Here: Places Named for Significant Events - Boo!: Ghostly Names with Spooky Beginnings - It's Called What?: Misnamings and Just Plain Wacky Names

Delightfully different yet intrinsically connected, each unique book in the Wow Canada! series celebrates a part of Canada's story in its own way. Together they weave a rich tale, as diverse and exciting as the country itself.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-From borrowed names like Delhi and Egypt Lake to truly homegrown names like Tuktoyaktuk and Kuujjuaq, from those that honor individuals to others that are bound to catch children's attention like Tickle Beach, Canadian place names are definitely colorful. Hughes has pulled together anecdotes, historical facts, and legends about the names of villages, towns, rivers, lakes, mountains, provinces, and more from across the country. The book is divided into categories such as "Dazed and Confused: Misspellings, Mispronunciations, and Plain Old Misnamings"; "For Real?: Weird, Wacky, and Wonderful Place Names"; and "Murder, Mayhem, and Missing Men: Names of Notoriety." This organization helps to keep the subject matter lively and easy to read. Colorful illustrations appear throughout, and the design includes highlighted text boxes, giving the pages a bright and inviting appearance. Overall, this is an enjoyable and informative read and, like others in the series, it offers an entertaining approach to history.
