Book Description

August 30, 2003 1591580609 978-1591580607 2

This practical day-by-day calendar is a goldmine for planning exciting activities and classroom units based on national and international holidays, multicultural and historic events, famous firsts, inventions, birthdays of important individuals (including authors), and more. The entries are annotated and include contact information and Web site addresses to facilitate further research and learning. In addition, three suggested learning activities are provided for each day of the year.

Designed for any year, this one-stop resource can be used over and over again as a ready-reference, daily activity guide, rainy-day resource, or idea generator for bulletin boards. Teachers, librarians, and parents can use the calendar entries and activity suggestions as a springboard to spark interest in a particular topic or event, enhance learning and awareness, or introduce students to a new unit of study. Invaluable to school and public libraries!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Organizational challenges are many for anyone undertaking a book on holidays. Should the scope be worldwide? Should it include religious celebrations? What about activities tied to the curriculum? Marks has done a yeoman's job of tackling the issues involved in such an undertaking. Beginning with a chapter on calendars that recognizes religious and cultural holidays with dates that vary (Easter, Hanukkah, Ramadan), she neatly avoids the problem of where to put such celebrations in the main text. The remainder of the book, which includes celebrations around the globe, is organized by month. Month-long celebrations lead off each chapter, followed by "special days," such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and notations of historical events, holidays, and special birthdays. Keyed to the text are a scattering of ideas that can be used to prompt class discussion and research. Not all entries receive sufficient attention (there's no explanation provided for "Guam celebrates Lady of Camarin Day"), and the entries are very eclectic, with some rather strange added facts (How many kids will care who Tom Mix is?). Yet teachers and librarians, particularly in elementary and middle schools, will find this chockablock with useful stuff, and the book is entertaining enough to attract children who like to browse.
