Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Each double-page spread in this introductory volume opens with a question, such as "Why Is Cupid a Valentine Symbol?" to explain the origins and traditions of the holiday. This technique divides the narrative into bites of information, often a paragraph or two per page. Pastel borders with small flowers and hearts fit the holiday spirit, but the cartoon faces are amateurishly drawn and are not particularly appealing. The riddles, trivia, instructions on how to make a pop-up Valentine's Day card, a recipe for sugar cookies, and saying "I love you" in many languages will be fun for the intended audience, and the Valentine verses range from the "Roses are red,/ violets are blue" variety to William Shakespeare and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Unfortunately, there is no mention of adult supervision included in the baking activity. Gail Gibbons's Valentine's Day (Holiday, 1986) is for the same audience, but is limited to history and traditions. Carol Barkin's Happy Valentine's Day! (Lothrop, 1988; o.p.), for slightly older readers, focuses less on the history and more on crafts and recipes. A serviceable addition for libraries with a great demand for holiday books.
