Editorial Reviews

Hot off the back track of last yr's blasted blowout "Pork Chop" single, DOSS sreve up a sanctifyingly satisfying 12 course sitting of funk fortified Iowa CIty groove stew on their debut full-length. Taking inspiration from Booker T & The MG's, The Meters, James Brown & the B3-driven , backyard bbq jams of Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, Jimmy McGriff, Lonnie Smith & Brother Jack McDuff. They've been honing their Hammond heavy brand of all-instro 'Action Soul Sound" throughout the mid-west

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid!, February 2, 2007
This review is from: Let's Cool One (Audio CD)
I loved this album from the first note. iTunes tells me I've listened to it 15 times, but I've listened to it several times in the car too and I still love it! My wife loves it too which is saying something.

What is it? All instrumental rock/funk/surf beats and riffs, but with an emphasis on improvisation. The prominent Hammond organ sounds the way only a Hammond can and the guitar has that classic chunkiness that's so retro that it's hip. These guys are great musicians, but without overplaying - just grooving. Most of the tunes follow a jazz form: a groove-oriented head, a bridge, a few solos, then the head again. I'd expect to see this in the Jazz section because of the improvisation, but the sound is all rock.

I've since bought "Destination... Get Down!" which is really good too, but Let's Cool One is a little better. Five stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars like a good tiki rum cocktail, November 5, 2011
This review is from: Let's Cool One (Audio CD)
Now these cats are hip. "Let's Cool One" is that smooth music that you should slip on your Hi-Fi next time you're sipping mixed drinks with mixed company, (ie: you want to get in some fine time with your lady friend and as much as you rock The Pagans it's just not setting the right mood). I really like this disc, and so does my gal, it's music for chillin'. This is like Dig-Cool-Dad-Cool-Dark-Sunglasses, Raw Hammond B Soul Music. They sound like Booker T. & the M.G.s, The Meters, Lou Donaldson or Jimmy Smith. The fact that The Diplomats of Solid Sound actually pull off doing this cool of music is amazing. Like Sourdough sez `If you're going to be a bear, be a BIG Grizzly Daddy-O'. I was surprised to find that "Let's Cool One" is mostly originals, because I felt like I'd heard them before, but I mean that in a good way, they totally sound like classics. Now granted I love trashy punk rock n' roll, but there's a time and a place for everything, and if you're needing some music with style, "The Diplomats of Solid Sound" deliver. They are like a good tiki rum cocktail, oh it's smooth, but not wimpy or lame, there's absolutely some kick in there. Brought to you from the fine crew over at Estrus Records, so you know it's been ridden hard and put away wet, (not some fat cat music suit's idea of what the kids will buy). The last word... The Diplomats of Solid Sound - "Let's Cool One" Dig It Dad!
