Editorial Reviews

This CD contains four complete programs made for U.S. National Guard recruitment and features Billy Maxted's Manhattan Jazz Band, a swinging traditional band which was equally at home performing items such as Gin Mill Blues or Milneburg Joys as more laid back numbers such as Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's Satin Doll. The vocalist on these sessions was the superb Jill Corey, a singer who was more than the equal of most of her contemporaries, who handles a song in a fine and precise manner. Tracks include: Milenberg Joys, When I Fall In Love, The Song Of The Wanderer, Cock Eyed Optomist, Up A Lazy River, I've Got The World On A String, Satin Doll, The Trolley Song.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what it's cracked up to be., February 3, 2010

This review is from: Let's Go To Town (Audio CD)
The packaging implies that Miss Corey works with the Billy Maxted Manhattan Jazz Band, but that isn't so. Corey's selections were recorded with a large studio orchestra. One might well conclude that Corey and Maxted never met.

Maxted's numbers themselves are true to their Red Nichols heritage. His bands were always sized between a small combo and a big band, tightly-arranged and ricky-ticky. The dixieland playing is clean and of big league quality.

Corey always comes off as a sweet kid with fine musicianship. Her singing has certain heartstring tugging qualities one might compare with that of Judy Garland, Helen Forrest or Betty Clooney.

These armed forces recruiting transcribed programs cleaned up well: the sound is pretty brilliant. If I remember correctly (I have filed the disc away), the dubbed in applause over the end of each selection is abrupt and phony, alas.
