I took out this book from the library and tried to use it for help-- it was a HUGE mistake. This book is so ridiculously outdated that basically all information in it is so off base that it gives you NO guide for any good decisions. As the book was published in 2004 and written before that, the prices given were a FRACTION of the cost. They would say an inexpensive hostel's name and would quote it at $15 per night-- it's current price would be $50. As I said-- EXTREMELY off-base. This didn't happen one time-- we tried using it in 4 cities with various hostels and forms of transportation. Perhaps because the areas have changed or because the guide is just poor, I sadly followed the guide's advice and went to a hostel recommended and ended up in a VERY bad area that was dangerous at night. The next day I went directly to the tourist information booth and basically stopped using the book. Do not trust this book's recommendations!

While I understand that books can be out of date, usually the publishers come out with a new edition when it is needed. It was needed in this case years ago. There have been a LOT of developments in Ecuador and many cities have grown TONS. There are towns that need to be listed that aren't, MANY nice hostels that should be in here that aren't (but bad ones that are), and many suggested attractions that need to be added. Let me recommend Lonely Planet for budget travelers... they update their guides and have just came out with a new edition for 2009!!

This book lacks some serious items, such as maps! The Lonely Planet guide is far superior.
