What Can I Say?,
This review is from: Let's Get It on (Audio CD)
This is, no doubt, one of the greatest sensual/soothing records of all time. It's constantly in rotation in my CD player, matter of fact, I'm listening to it right now. To all Marvin's true fans I would also suggest picking up his 4 CD "Master" collection. It's tight, especially disc 3 & 4. Anyway, if you haven't done so yet, pick up "Let's Get It On," you'll be glad you did. Thanks, Sean C.

More than a seduction CD...,

I know this album had an influence in my life--from long weekends in the dormitory missing my out of town girlfriend("Distant Lover" sometimes made me feel better, sometimes it didn't) to those blue lighted frat parties where we freshmen guys thought that we could get with one of the junior or senior coeds (everybody sang "AAAAaaah baby" with Marvin on the title track and the party was on)...and then as I got older and understood what Marvin was talking about ('Cause we know all the words to all the songs and mindlessly sing along with them, but never really connect them to our own lives, really...am I right?) in "Just To Keep You Satisfied" and how his situation seemed to divide his soul even more and how my situation was seeming to parallel his. Many call this Marvin's outright seduction CD, well, that may be true but, between the lines you can feel much more... you can feel his struggle to remain an individual in a despotic system (Motown, the U. S.of A.), you can feel the rumblings of Marvin and Anna's age difference take its toll on the duo, particularly with Marvin garnering attention from younger women(--it seems no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors), you can hear father time knocking at his own 40something door. What happened, of course, is that Marvin did what most artists do when several personal struggles envelope their very being--he created a perfect piece of work..this "seduction CD". And, fortunately for us, we are able to also relive some of our own moments, good and not so good, some involving romance, some not, with Marvin's work.

Shows the virtue of mix tapes and "best of" collections,

I bought this CD for the first song. It is one of the best songs ever written and one that emphasises romanticism over sexuality (ironic is that when Marvin Gaye sings about sex, you know he's singing about love. When Barry WHite sings about love, you know he's singing about sex - heck, you are in the bedroom with him.) and after seeing High Fidelity I needed to have this song in my head.Unfortunately the rest of the album is mediocre. There are two other really good songs ("Distant Lovers" and "Just To Keep You Satisfied") but the rest of the songs are forgettable, mediocre or just plain awful. "You Sure Love to Ball" should have been a "lost" track. "Keep Getting it On" is just banking on the success of "Let's Get it On" and repeats all the great riffs of the original song, relating everything to a peacenik mentality that I suppose was popular when America was engaged in a stupid war, but is really dated now. The other three songs are forgettable. So buy it if you really love the title song, but note that the three good songs on this CD are on "best of" collections. If you want a Marvin Gaye cd that is consistantly excellent, buy "What's Going On"

Let's get it on is one of the best love ballads of the 1970's. Come get to this represents free sexuality. You sure love to ball is Buck wild sex. Distant Lover is long distance love. This is a classic buy it!

This is the one Marvin Gaye album that everybody should have,

I first fell in love with this album in the summer of 1976, and I've never tired of it. I've listened to a few thousand albums since then and this is the only album that has never been out of my Top 3 Albums Of all Time! I endorse all the comments above, particularly the point that this is really just one long piece of music that changes in mood as it goes along, and it's all great! I've never understood why critics' lists always include the overrated "What's Going On" but leave out this soul masterpiece - the only other soul album that gets close to this is Millie Jackson's "Caught Up". Buy that too!

Soul Searching,

It would be difficult to add anything new to what has already been written about Marvin Gaye's phenominal " Let's Get It On " a disc so filled with raw emotion and so much true passion that it gives the listener the sense that he's eavesdropping on the singers most honest and truest emotions. But after releasing " What's Going On " his 'other' masterpiece, Marvin was well past the point of just putting out "silly love songs". And so releasing a disc with so much power and one that revealed so much inner strife in Marvin's life he, once again, laid himself bare. While to a large degree the lyrical content of this disc is fairly blase, it is the earthy and ultimately honest musicianship and the sheer intensity of Marvin's vocals that set this album apart from the many pale imitations that have we've heard since. What follows is truly gut-wrenching and almost spiritually cleansing in nature. In every sense Marvin opens himself up for not only the listener's pleasure but also for all to see how honest, true love can take a man and lead him to a higher plane when dealing with these chaotic emotions. And in reaching a certain existential level by obtaining pleasure in the physical sense than it should thereby lead to an even higher level spiritually. I simply believe that Marvin saw a connection between a spiritual world with a loving God and one in which God gave us a sense of pleasure by seeking him in the flesh. In every song, especially the title track and " Distant Lover " you're hearing a singer who is devoid of any shame in his physical/spiritual needs and one who wants to give as much as he receives from his 'object of deisire'....whoever she may be. And who she is really isn't what's important. I simply believe that this was Marvin Gaye's very intimate and sincere road to redemption...not only from past heartbreaks but also from the world around him, i.e. Vietnam, the Civil Rights movement and his own personal failures as a man. In looking back it makes perfect sense to record " Let's Get It On " as a worthy follow-up to ' What's Going On " seeing how both discs show not just an artist but also a man who is questioning his very existence and searching for answers that can only come from within. Obviously as individual's we all can only take what we choose from any piece of music. It's simply up to each of us to explore what " Let's Get It On " means to each of us. Unfortunately, Marvin passed away before I believe he found those answers but he did leave us with a sense of where each of us could look to help in our own search. And whether you concur with what is written here (or perhaps not!) at least we can agree that this cd is without a doubt one of the most powerful statements ever recorded.

Marvin is one of those artist that no matter how many times you listen to his albums you never get tired of them. Lets get it one has so many moods attached to it and it is in my opinion one of his best works. I love the last track - just to keep you satifed and number 2 is a favorite of mine as well. As with any music associated with Marvin, I will never get tired of listening to him and love this album to bits. From a fan in London.

A Musical Standard!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Let's Get It on (Audio CD)
Anyone who gives this album less than 5 stars does not deserve to be called a sane music critic. This album is pure soul heaven and has been a standard that soul musicians have been struggling for decades to emulate but never come close. Musicians normally have to toil away at songwriting and production, to Marvin it came like breathing, and the subjects of love, sex desire and relationships were his true homeground. "Whats going on" was a landmark album but "Lets get it on" surpasses it for that reason. When it comes to sexual desire, "Lets get it on" is THE DE-FACTO STANDARD fullstop! The other songs are beautifully and "Distant Lover" a song is close to my heart, but the title song is the killer - emotional purity! The ultimate soul album from the ultimate soulman. Stop beatin' around the bush and get your copy!
