When I picked this CD up as a cutout for 99 cents, I didn't really know anything about the band but I was intrigued by their take-off on the Rolling Stones' Aftermath cover art. As it turns out the four multi-instrumentalists who make up the Chesterfield Kings wear their Stones' influence proudly on their sleeves. Additional band photos mimic the Stones' Through the Past Darkly. They include two Strong Stones' covers: "Street Fighting Man" and the obscure "Can't Believe It." Even the originals pay tribute to the Stones' repertoire. "Drunkhouse," "Long Ago, Far Away" and "I'm So Confused, Baby" borrow from "Country Honk," "Street Fighting Man" and "In Another Land" respectively. And lead singer Greg Prevost has Jagger's swaggering vocals down cold. And for good measure, ex-Stone Mick Taylor guests on "I'm Not Talking." [Ex-Savoy Brown frontman Kim Simmonds also takes a turn on "It's Getting Harder All the Time."] But don't think of this as a mere tribute album, it's not. These guys freely acknowledge their influences, but they also make some kick-ass rock 'n' roll. RECOMMENDED

4.0 out of 5 stars What if the Stones were a new band in the 90's?, February 15, 2001

The Chesterfield Kings are a great cover band. When they choose to replicate a band's material, not only do the actual covers sound like the original band, but (and this is the important part)the new songs sound like "lost" songs by that band. The Black Crowes only WISHED they sounded this much like the late 60's version of the Stones. However, I don't want this to sound like it's all covers. Only two of the songs are Stones' covers (there are a couple other covers as well). Buy this CD for the originals, especially if you keep complaining that they (including the Stones!!) don't make them like they used to. Listen to the sample from Drunkhouse and tell me that you don't want to own this CD immediately. I've personally bought 5 copies over the years to give to friends, and everybody has LOVED it.

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys rule!, December 1, 2005

Who does a better Stones' than the Stones? Well, they are one of the best garage rock revival bands since the Crawdaddys, The Tell Tale Hearts and other garage rock revivalists. Somebody's gotta carry the Stones torch and it ain't gonna be the Stones, they're gettin' way too old to do anything. Chesterfield Kings! Yes, they rule!

Sometimes the line between homage and parody is as blurred as "Let's Go Get Stoned"'s cover art. Chesterfield Kings singer Greg Prevost does a deadly accurate Mick Jagger imitation, mixed with such exaggerated helpings of funny and cruel that it's hard to untangle his intent. But the music behind him ( Nuggets-worthy R&B-based garage rock vainly grasping for the stars) kicks as hard as the Stones in '66, so his intentions get to have it both ways: tribute and parody. Come to think of it, the greatest moments of the Stones themselves tend to straddle that same fence. Nicely done.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm giving this CD a 3.9 star rating., February 11, 2011

This review is from: Let's Go Get Stoned (Vinyl)
I finished going over my 60's Garage Rock in iTunes and added my reviews and uploads to youtube on the unavailable songs, and have started going over my Garage Rock Revival and this is one of the standout bands.

Yes I know I'm preaching to the choir when it comes to some great Garage Rock Revival, But If your not familiar with them, be prepared to hear some great rocking music! :-)

I have 70 songs, 3.4 hours of The Chesterfield Kings, BUT will concentrate on this CD for this Bulletin: Let's Go Get Stoned (Mirror)-1994.

Check out the CD at allmusic.com for a nice review OR amazon.com where 6 customers gave it an average rating of 4.5 stars.
If you want to buy this CD one person is selling it new at amazon's site for $22.98 USD including S/H.
Otherwise check you favorite music stores where you live.

What you get is 14 songs, 43.7 minutes of some of the finest Rolling Stones-esque songs available by them in 1994.
What I got was 9 songs, 27.9 minutes of above average songs (4 star and above) with 3 songs, 8.1 minutes of 5 star songs IMHO.

I was surprised that none of my favorite songs by them on this CD were available on youtube so I'll add them to that site.

Johnny Volume - The Chesterfield Kings - 1994 - "CLASSIC Mick Jagger-esque R&B ASS Kicking vocals. Nice guitar riffs."

Street Fighting Man - The Chesterfield Kings - 1994 - "VERY ACCURATE classic R&R Mick Jagger-esque Rolling Stones cover."

I'm Not Talking - The Chesterfield Kings - 1994 - "Ex-Stone's Mick Taylor guests on slide guitar. HOT R&R guitar hooks, vocals."

PS: The Chocolate Watchband aped The Rolling Stones in the 1960's with EXCELLENT results and this band took up the mantle in the 1980's with equal results!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD the Stones Didn't Record, September 9, 2009

The Aftermath-esque cover art and title set the stage for the Chesterfield Kings' Rolling Stones album. They cover only one Stones' song, "Street Fighting Man," but all sound like they could have appeared on one Rolling Stones album or another. This is worth getting and may be hard to find if out of print. If you enjoy the music of the Rolling Stones' London label recordings, you will really like this.
