I bought this book because my neice wrote it. I didn't know what to expect. I thought having a sister who is lesbian, taught me a lot. Not as much as I thought. I never considered what the children might be dealing with. The recent headlines threw a blinding light on some of the ugliness going on. After reading Let's Get This Straight, I wonder if such a piece of work could have made a difference in some of those lives. Education and understanding is a wonderful thing. This is a wonderful way for youngsters to learn how to deal with some of the issues they might be facing, such as fear, harrassment and feelings of isolation. It gives them the encouragement to to use journeling to cope and decifer their feelings, it encourges them to talk respectfully with their parents and keep communications open. It even gives snappy comebacks to some of the ignorant questions asked by children and adults. The participants were open and candid about how they either delt with or hid their true feelings. This body of work gives many resources for assistance and education. I didn't know there were so many organizations geared toward the LGBTQ community and families. I am pleased to now be an advocate for social change. This book teaches youth, there is nothing wrong with you. You are not alone. Seek help. Don't be afraid or bullied. It opened my eyes. This book is not just for the LGBTQ community. We can all learn something. I did. Thanks, Tina. I stand right beside you.
This book was eloquently written. It provides a wealth of information. It's eye opening, it's simple, it's to the point, it's detailed and it's written with true compassion!
This book fills a huge gap in the books and resources available to youth and young adults with LGBTQ parents. Especially given the recent news about youth taking their own lives after experiencing anti-LGBTQ bullying, its more important than ever that every single youth know that they are not alone.
Tina and COLAGE have made leaps and bounds in that effort with this book. While its audience is definitely youth- this book is needed reading for anyone who works with or cares about young people who have one or more lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer parent.
This books is excellent! I wasn't expecting all the resources listed! This is not just a book for kids it is a book for all that want to understand what children of LGBT parents go through. I found this book extremely insightful!
Let's Get This Straight: The Ultimate Handbook for Youth with LGBTQ Parents By Tina Fakhrid-Deen with COLAGE
Let me start off by saying I am a biased reviewer. Yes, I grew up with lesbian moms. Yes, I am a gay parent to a wonderful son. And yes, I have a served on the board of COLAGE and as a former chapter leader. And most importantly, I am a huge fan and friend of the author Tina Fakhrid-Deen. With that aside, I found myself surprised and impressed with this book.
Most of these types of guides I have read over my years of work in LGBT families have been quite boring, academic and written from someone analyzing us youth, never having lived as Queerspawn. Maybe that is why Fakhrid-Deen is so good, or maybe it is just that her talent for conversation, ability to work with and understand today's youth shines through.
Let's Get This Straight reaches out to young people with one or more gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer parents to provide tools to combat homophobia, take pride in their alternative family structures, and speak out against injustice.
It uses a very relaxed jargon and grasp of pop-culture to help guide youth with LGBTQ parents through life's/societies homophobic obstacles.
The short but thorough book profiles forty-five diverse youth and young adults, all of whom voice their opinions and provide advice for other youth living in LGBTQ households. Let's Get This Straight also includes probing questions, fun activities, engaging quizzes, and reflective journal sections for youth to share their feelings and experiences about having a gay parent.
Fakhrid-Deen wanted to write this book to share the voices and experiences of youth with LGBTQ parents.... "I also wanted to provide youth with answers to common questions, she stated, and empower them to fight for social justice."
And share the experiences it does. It showcases the vast diversity of youth with LGBTQ parents. Fakhrid-Deen says, I wanted to make sure that many voices were represented." And it is apparent that the whole COLAGE community came together to help me find under-represented voices like youth with transgender parents, kids born through donor insemination and youth of color.
This book is a must have over any other "guide" or book geared to help youth with a LGBTQ. Trust me this will not sit on a shelf, it will be highlighted, dog-eared and references for years to come.Read more ›

As a therapist I find this book very helpful in working with young clients who are struggling to come to terms with a parent's non-heterosexual life style. The book covers many different aspects and feelings experienced by such children and is written in a very easy to understand style which is great for young people. Kudos for a job well done!
