The Battle of the Vegetables
The Battle of the Vegetables
Leeks who believe a cow is one of Santa’s reindeer, carrots who accept an invitation to a party given by rabbits, and a leek and carrot couple whose romance precipitates total vegetable warfare are the hapless protagonists in these satiric, snarky stories. Hardcover

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

My young sons inspired me to write this book. We spend summer nights at a local minor league ballpark soaking up the atmosphere. I remember the thrill I got as a young boy when my dad would tell me he bought tickets to a Cardinals game in St. Louis. Taking a trip to the city to watch my favorite team was a real treat, and I have vivid memories of those times with my dad. I wanted to create a book that shows kids what the ballpark experience is like and introduces them to the elements of the sport, whether they enjoy baseball at a minor league ballpark or a major league stadium. I hope you enjoy reading this book with your children and connect with each other through baseball.

About the Author

Doug Malan is a writer who grew up near St. Louis and became a lifelong Cardinals fan after his first trip to Busch Stadium. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two sons.

More About the Author

Douglas S. Malan also is known as "Doug," but he often attaches his formal name to his work to make his parents happy. These parents and his older sisters raised him in a small southern Illinois community where coal mining, farming and teaching were popular careers and the St. Louis Cardinals were adored. There he slowly learned the benefits of being bored, which led to brainstorming entrepreneurial pursuits (selling mud pies), forming a neighborhood foamball league (with official rule book and a structure for levying fines), reading, playing sports, riding dirt bikes, writing stories about dirt bikes and many other activities natural for a boy living in a town of 3,300 people. Though he moved away for college and currently lives far from his hometown, he's still a meat-and-potatoes guy who respects his roots. Several of his teachers cultivated his love of learning and passion for writing, and his professional career began in 1997. He is interested in and has written about topics such as sports, law, music, history, food, and life.

My 17 kindergarten students loved this book. It held their attention and the illustrations and colors are very eye catching. Would recommend this book for any teacher starting her classroom book library and for any teacher looking to add to her library. If my children were still little or if I had grandchildren this book would be a must for us. As for now, I get to share it with my students and am passing it along in my school so other classes get to enjoy it too!

As a daycare provider/preschool teacher for 25 years, I've read many thousands of books. This book is one of my all- time favorites! It keeps the children's attention at circle time, and they've asked to hear it again and again! It is written in a way that is easy to read with expression and the children are delighted to hear the umpire bellow "PLAY BALL!"

I purchased this book for a friend's baby shower. Before I gave it as a gift, I read it to my kids. They loved it, so I ordered another one for us! It starts at t-ball and goes on from there. It would be a great book to buy for your child when they start playing t-ball. Very informative and fun!
