This review is from: Let's Go Gardening: A Young Person's Guide to the Garden (Hardcover)
There is plenty of good information in this book, and photos of children gardening. But there are far too many words-per-page for the age group it is intended for (ages 4-8). I didn't count, because I don't want to be here all day, but I would guess about 1,000 words per two-page spread. Originally I bought it for my garden-loving son to read to himself, but instead I'll be reading it aloud to him.The other problem is that it was translated from German to English, so the wording is awkward at times, and the advice is sometimes more suitable for a European climate. But it is a legitimate gardening book; instead of playful activities it gives solid information. The details are explained in ways that are relevant to kids-- it says that different plants like different sorts of soils and climates, just like different children like different kinds of cake. |
