5.0 out of 5 stars Let's Have Healthy Children
This book is by far the very best book about nutrition during pregnancy, and early childhood. 1.0 out of 5 stars Historical oddity, not sound medical advice.
In 1978, two month old Ryan Pitzer died when his mother followed the advice in this book, giving him about three-quarters of a teaspoon of potassium chloride to treat colic. Potassium chloride causes cardiac arrest in large doses. Why would Adelle Davis publish advice that actually kills people? Please don't follow the advice in this book unless a REAL doctor approves it.

This book is by far the very best book about nutrition during pregnancy, and early childhood. Adelle discusses how poor nutrition can cause homely children, and low I.Q. scores and a host of other "common" childhood problems. Premature birth, small birthweight, jaundice, SIDS, colic. . . all can be totally eliminated by doing what she teaches! I have two very healthy boys, both weighed 8 lbs at birth. My Nutrition was better the second time (after reading her book which I purchased used at a local thrift store for 50 cents) I had a great home birth, and have a beautiful boy who was totally breastfed for six months, and skipped commercial baby food altogether. I am just sick about not knowing this information with my first son from the beginning. I read everything I could get my hands on regarding pregnancy, childbirth, nutrition, breastfeeding and none of these popular, current books told me even half of what I gathered in just my first quick scan of this book! I am really desparate to get some new copies for some friends and for myself-- my copy is yellowed with age and the pages are brittle! I suggest this one even if you get NO other book during your entire childbearing years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tested and proven, March 28, 2000
When we learned we would be able to adopt a baby, I knew I couldn't breastfeed, so I began to study nutrition. I learned a lot, but as with any research, I learned that not everyone agreed. This was twenty-five years ago when doctors were still telling you that Vitamin E was totally unneccessary. After reading everything in our local library, I selected this book as the one that made the most sense. Following Adelle Davis' advice I raised a very healthy son and improved the health of the rest of the family as well. Now I'm looking for the book again because my daughter has misplaced her copy and is frantic to get it for my sixth grandchild--all raised on Adelle Davis, all remarkably healthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for caring parents, August 29, 1999
By A Customer
I have read this book and my wife followed the advice during the pregnancies of our four daughters. Each baby was strong and healthy at birth, able to raise their chest off the mattress by about one inch the day after birth. They each had full control of their heads being able to turn and look around at the light in the delivery room. I have not found another book to compare to the information provided in this, and believe that this book should be promoted strongly in the face of child birth defects and health problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's Have Healthy Children, February 12, 2000

This book has been a lifesaver! I own two copies, both belonged to my mother who purchased them when she had her children. They have been a valuable addition to my referance library. All of my pregnant friends call with nutritional questions that this book has answered accurately. I am amazed that no one recomends this book for pregnant women to read since this is the best nutritional guide I have seen. It is the perfect gift for all those who are expecting, or already have children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Having a beautiful child, July 5, 2006
One of the unique things about this book is its explanation of exactly which types of nutritional deficiencies cause children to look plain or even ugly, and which types of nutrition allow your child to be as beautiful as possible. It was unbelievable to learn how much of a child's looks depend on developing bone structure! Now when I look at children, I often see the results of good and bad nutrition, which I would once have blamed on genetic inheritance from parents. Considering the huge impact that healthy, attractive appearance has on a child's life, this book is worth ten times its price for this one chapter alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Ahead of Her Time, January 11, 2000
By A Customer
I followed Adelle Davis's advice thirty years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter, and then through the birth of her brother and both their childhoods. They have always been smart, healthy, and attractive people, and I think AD's advice helped.

I generally keep an eye out for new studies on nutrition and, time and again, I find that something Adelle recommended, such as the importance of anti-oxidants and of folic acid for pregnant women, has become nutritional gospel. She even recommended PABA to combat sunburn before there was such a thing as sunblock on the market.

What I wish would happen now is that doctors would read her comments on giving iron salts to pregnant women. She cites studies that implicate them in miscarriages, prematurity, and toxemia. I feel obstetricians should pay more attention to what's in the supplements they give their patients and how those substances interact in the body. In other words, I wish obstetricians knew more about nutrition and could help their patients have easier pregnancies and healthier babies. Their abilities to diagnose and provide emergency care are laudable, but as the new grandmother of a premature baby, whose mother followed her doctor's advice to the letter, I wish doctors knew about the kind of preventive care this book helps women achieve.

As I understand it, this book is being reprinted. I hope it comes with a new foreword by respected physicians. It's a book that, ideally, should continue to promote research that will mean healthier babies. What could be more important?

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BIBLE FOR HEALTHY PREGNANCIES, February 1, 2010

I bought this book originally in 1981 when I was pregnant with my first child because I was totally ignorant as to what nutrition was needed durig preganancy to have a healthy, normal baby.

Adele Davis really opened my eyes as to how important diet is for EVERYTHING when you are pregnant from your child's facial structure to their brain developement, etc.

It became my bible throughout both of my pregnancies, resulting in 2 beautiful children, who are now in their 20's who were perfectly developed, beautiful, healthy, strong and with IQ's way above average, (one tested at 137 when he was 5 years old).

It was so rewarding to see that the way I ate while I was pregnant had such a direct effect on the health and well being of my children. I also breast fed them both, one for 9 months, the other for 8.

I have now bought this book for both my daughter and my daughter-in-law, so that we can have healthy children in the next generation of my family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever on Basic Nutrition, September 22, 2009

Although this book, Let's Have Healthy Children - Expanded Edition, was copyrighted in 1972, the information on nutrition supplied by Adelle Davis through her own observations and the research available at the time is still valid today and it is even more important than ever for us to understand what it takes to provide ourselves with proper nutrition. In a society that has become reliant on processed foods that do not meet our nutritional needs, it is important to understand why these foods are not adequate for a healthy diet. In this book we learn not only what it takes for any person to gain proper nutrition, but also that it is important for a woman to gain and maintain proper nutrition well in advance of conception and to maintain the same high level of nutrition throughout pregnancy, as well as after, to make sure her body is able to supply adequate nutrition to her developing baby, while at the same time making sure that the baby does not deplete the nutritional resources of the mother's body. This book also explains how to give the baby the best nutrition possible after birth to reach his or her best mental and physical potential. In this book, Adelle Davis speaks plainly and uses language that is easily understood, so it is easy for most people understand the concepts she presents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Nutritional Understanding for Raising Children, January 5, 2003
By
"pdm731" (Glendale, Arizona United States) - See all my reviews
In this classic book for child nutrition, Adele makes understanding how to keep your child healthy so simple. Her story of how she brought both her adopted children back to health is touching and eye-opening. This is a Must Read for any Mother or Mother-to-be. It also gives you great insight applied to yourself. Keep your children and yourself healthy using information that works. It may have been published a while back but the information is still sound today. Human Bodies have not changed that much since she wrote this. In fact, doctors and health professionals just keep (re)discovering the basic truths she wrote about here. Alergies, asthma, building strong bones, preventing colds...is all here. This should be the primary healthcare book for keeping kids well. Give that index a good look. It is the quickest way to solving problems. Doctors should refer to this one and Let's Get Well first.
