Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Once it was hard to find books for girls that didn't feature damsels loitering on the sidelines or being rescued by dashing princes. Now paper heroines are generally brave and resourceful, but, alas, many of the books aren't memorable. Enter Erica Bauermeister and Holly Smith (500 Great Books by Women), book-lovers who collected fiction, biography, and poetry with girls aged 2-14 in mind. They have culled a stellar group of 375 titles divided into picture books, storybooks, chapter books, and more complex writings. Their lively, evocative reviews cover a peppering of old favorites like Madeline and A Wrinkle in Time, but many selections spring from different cultures and up-to-date issues.

From Scientific American

A wonderful resource for parents who want to encourage their daughters to be strong, capable and self-reliant.

More About the Author

Erica Bauermeister is the author of the bestselling novel The School of Essential Ingredients (Putnam, 2009) which follows the lives of eight students and their teacher in a cooking class held in a restaurant kitchen. Her new novel, Joy for Beginners (Putnam, June 2011) explores what happens to seven women who challenge one another to do one thing in the next year that is new or difficult or scary. The twist? - they don't get to choose their own challenges. Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain, has called Joy for Beginners "moving, touching, wonderfully written; inspiring to read." Erica Bauermeister is also the co-author of two nonfiction books: 500 Great Books by Women: A Reader's Guide and Let's Hear It For the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. She lives in Seattle and loves to talk with book groups. You can find her at www.ericabauermeister.com.

This book would have been a valuable resource, if it listed the books by reading level. I was hoping to find good chapter books for my daughter to read (2nd grade reading level). But all I find is a huge chapter labeled "Chapter Books: Ages 6-11". This book should only be recommended for parents who have lots of time to cruise the library going from book to book, looking for something at an appropriate reading level for their child.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best guide out there, July 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14 (Paperback)
This is a decent guide, so it's too bad it lacks age levels. If you are looking for a more up-to-date guide with more books and an age range for each book, try Great Books for Girls by Kathleen Odean, revised in 2002.

Great book! Steers you to old favorites and new finds via indices for author, title, date of pub, genre, region & subject. Recommended age ranges recognize the variation in reading development and draw you on to the next level. A fun book to read just on its own.
